Thank you Peter for updating us on this case from a legal perspective. 💗 Considering everything that these brothers endured growing up, I think that they have served their time and should be given a chance to live their lives instead of remain behind bars for their rest of their lives imho.

Let them out. If this crime happens today … not a chance it gets punished as harshly. As a society we need to start making it possible for boys and men to announce all forms of abuse. Males are also victims NOT always the perpetrators.

No one, not even their family, is absolving them of all guilt. The point is that they were violently r***ed since pre-school age, and they’ve productively served more than their time.

I’m a little confused. If there had to be an overt act by Jorge that made Sarah Boone fear for her life in that day so zipped him in the suitcase, why was there no overt act necessary on the day the Menendez brothers decided kill their parents? Also, was the mother involved in the “abuse?” Is it different than intimate partner violence or is it a CA law?

You called them "boys" they are not. They were adults when they took shotguns and blew their parents away. I was also a victem as a child. Many many girls are. I never would murder my family member. I hated him but moved away and lived my life. They chose as adults to kill. That is why they are in prison. Mom and Dad are not here to defend themselves. Is the Mendez fourtune in play...ya i bet theres money. Sorry murder is murder.

Does it matter if the abuse was real, and they acted out of desperation? It's just a question, not an opinion. Because if it does, what happens tomorrow when thousands of people murder their abusers?? We have decided not to execute abusers. Had all this come out before the murders, the mother would not deserve a second chance? Where were all these family members before? Would he have opened his door and protected them if they came there wanting protection from their father? Did they ever?

Sexual abuse from a family member, caregiver, good friend, really anyone that you know and care for, including marital rape, is heartbreaking, life-rending and seems to impact more people than you know.

Someone in my extended family who was known to be a perpetrator against their stepchildren (protected by his spouse, never arrested) recently died and I learned of the extent of the abuse. Knowing now that my life has also been touched by one of these heartbreaking statistics, I wonder what would've happened if my family turned out like this ... would I support like victims in the aftermath, like the Menendez family seems to be doing?

I think so.

this case means so much to so many of us for various reasons. I have been so anxious, hopeful and heartbroken for the past few days, looking at the court videos of all of the witnesses essentially proving that the brothers were simply terrorised by their own parents, for years. I am so scared to hope, and I know that I would be absolutely devastated if their requests were denied.  But I also know that, should we get to witness them exiting the gates of the prison and get to hug their aunties and uncles as free men, many of us would be healed of our own wounds. they represent more than mos people understand.

I feel this is a pivotal moment in our society, which will determine whether we and especially the younger generations, can trust our justice system to be fair. many of us are hoping to see proof that victims are being heard and that they are not being unjustly punished for acting out in desperation.
Please keep talking about this over the next few days. I am sure many of us need to not feel isolated and would appreciate any chance to come together in discussion around this case.

Wow! My dad was a CO and from my perspective the fact that they have guards writing on their behalf is HUGE. Not only because I know from experience they can be (fairly) paranoid, they have excellent BS detection, and the guards probably know who the guys currently are the best of anyone. They were with them day in and out for all these years.

That they were abused alone didn't make me feel like the sentence should be reconsidered. MANY people are horrifically abused and don't murder anyone. It can be a consideration in some cases for sure...but anyone who solves problems with premeditated murder would have to meet an incredibly high standard of rehabilitation for me to feel safe with them in society. Sometimes abuse ruins the victim's ability to form empathy and a conscience. It's heartbreaking, but letting those people out to create more victims isn't right.

In their case, it sounds like they have done a lot of rehabilitation. I was still on the fence until I heard the COs would welcome them in their neighborhood...now I'm completely in support if they have a good transition team and a period of some kind of supervision. Mandated therapy or something like that. ...it seems like that would be helpful for anyone getting out after a long sentence.

its a lot,all kinds of situations back in days that was crazy,,slavery, incest,,Egyptian incest..wrongful exutions of minors,,,thank God times has changed...I think the courts mostly looked at the dramatic killing the way they put it in that their face was blown off as when all they had to do is leave,,laws shouldn't had made boys men between 18-21 their brains are still at a teenager under 21 still til this day men don't mature early,,getting a job under 21 doesn't make them good on decisions,,it sad their entire life of being raped at 6,,,until grown of being groomed ,,even in death Jose still rules them in nightmares and they probably still hear his voice...its like a woman abused and got away to anew life ,,its going to take a minute to know he's not there,,,,

Give me a break, we have a convicted rapist with 30+ felonies on the ballot for president! We as Americans are not great judges of person body rights and victims rights!
We have to remember OJ shamed this DA office, so the Menendez case had to be a win.

I feel bad for the family. If they were truly abused, I feel bad for them too. However, they murdered their parents while they watched TV. Not as they were abusing them. It wasn't self-defense. I would feel differently if it had been during an assault, but it wasn't. The "boys" (they weren't boys, they were of age) also showed indifference when they went on a shopping spree after the murders. They showed no remorse at all. They, like Sarah Boone, were adults and could have left at any time. They could have (and should have) reported the abuse and gotten out of the house.
Abuse of a child is horrific. It should NEVER happen, but it does, way too frequently. Abuse should not be an excuse to murder.

They might deserve a new trial, but they should not just be paroled. I thoroughly believe murder should be a capital offense. They should have to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the abuse they allege actually occurred. I don’t see that happening. If either of them had killed their father during the abuse, that would be a different story and one would think there would be some physical evidence to substantiate their claims. Make them prove it.

Despite their abuse, they did have choice. They were 18, they could have left that house and gotten a job. they could have done so many things. Their rediculous spending after they ended the lives of their alleged abusers and the prison bragging on the phone post first trial gives me great pause. Their choice did want to include the wealth, including napping with a safe. The family is asking for some leniency. As the DA or whomever is the governing body, I would like to hear what the prison programs are saying, what their priest or prison counsel is saying, and I could understand perhaps finishing the sentence for time served and still have parole guidelines in place.

I think the reason Lyle didn’t testify the second time was twofold, one because it took everything he had in him to agree to speak about what he had gone through period, let alone on the stand in front of thousands of people, that alone must have been terrifying for him, but secondly he was ridiculed by the media and betrayed yet again by that horrific woman who shared his calls with everyone, when if you listen to them, all he was doing is relating to her how well he thought the trial was going and how his and Erik’s defence was destroying the prosecution and their witnesses by proving they were all lying! Yes he dropped the f bomb and was a little excited it parts of the phone calls, but it was made to look like he was bragging that he got away with lying about everything and the jury fell for his performance! This was a man who was hoping for a good outcome and was feeling elevated that he had spoken about the horrible things his father had put him through and people actually believed him! That witch of a woman pretending to be a good person just joined the list of people who betrayed them for , money, jealousy, or whatever the hell she thought she could gain from their downfall. Those brothers have spent their lives being betrayed in one way or another, they have suffered enough. Please God don’t let them suffer their entire lives… sign the petition and get them out.. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
