I'm a teacher. Government schooling is a failed social experiment. All government schools should be privatized, and a full-ride voucher/scholarship should be given to the bottom half based on property taxes. Over time, these vouchers should also be privatized. Schools should compete, and specialize. The existing government schools system is racist in it's effect.

Empathy do teachers have any? from what I have seen today, very little. First girl crying on corridor. I got tissues and talked to her whilst her teacher carried on teaching in the classroom. Minutes later another girl came walking down corridor in bits, she couldn't even speak until after I got her to regulate her breathing. Both had passes to go to a designated office but no one was there.They ended up in the music departments office. I visit the school once a week to teach piano. I recently had to go in for an extra day for a safe guarding lecture, which was a complete pile of bull and goodness knows how much it cost. Do protocols work, really?

On forst listening thos sounds wonderful and I am sure it is in many respects. For example Birbalsingh's statement " Children crave discipline" Katherine Birbalsingh ....another way of putting this could be "Children crave boundaries" how can we possibly exist without boundaries.. Discipline is a better word if it isnt loaded with the moniker of 'cruelty'. Yes, absolutely discipline can be happiness if that discipline is applied to what you love to do. Also other things Iappreciated about her approach is "taking responsibility' and 'doing something not just for yourself but the greater good'. We have become so selfish and self absorbed. A good life doesn't have to be a 'famous' or 'wealthy' life although of course it can be. Ultimately a good life is a life well lived. Also loved what she said about guilt, middle class guilt.
However, there is some stuff I dont like at all, the generic reference to 'HE' girls and women do exist!!! Forbidding children to work in groups, that is crazy. Strictness re dress code...can be taken to ridiculous extremes. The danger is to churn little individualistic Tory voting conservative empire praising automatons.

Black Lives matter (BLM) is not trendy. Neither is LGBTQ. We cant all be conservatives. It is also possible to address these issues and still be disciplined.

I went to a grammar school in East London, leaving in 1980 with the full complement of o-levels. I'm from a working class, uneducated, manual-job, 2nd generation immigrant family - and a walking advert for social mobility! I learned all about England's past, its literarure, dead white men etc. My secondary education laid the foundation for me to think critically, listen to others, work on my own and in teams. Current emphasis on passing exams to maintain a school's Ofsted rating, misguided changes to the curriculum and teaching methods, all combine with social/familial challenges to produce a failing system.
