HANNA-BARBERA: THE RECORDED HISTORY
From Modern Stone Age to Meddling Kids
by Greg Ehrbar
(co-author, Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records)
Foreward by Tim Matheson / Preface by Leonard Maltin

The number of lives that Hanna-Barbera’s numerous creations and characters have touched is incalculable and ever-increasing. The creative partnership of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera and their associates brought forth countless sights to remember. They won seven Oscars, two Emmy Awards, created the first primetime animated sitcom, the first live-action/animated series, produced theatrical features and award-winning live-action projects. Through all of this, they also developed highly distinctive, landmark forms of music and sound.

From Yogi Bear and The Flintstones to Jonny Quest and Scooby-Doo and beyond, Hanna-Barbera has been celebrated primarily through visual art. There is far more to the impact of Hanna-Barbera. The music, vocal work and sound effects are also an iconic part of its success. By extension, over 200 Hanna-Barbera recordings, many produced by the studio itself, have been released since 1945 and continue to be produced to this day.

“The sound of the animation” was a key factor in Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera’s work, especially after they formed their company and their audio became one of their most powerful assets to counter the limits of television. (A musician since childhood, Bill was writing songs for Harman and Ising cartoons before he met Joe.) Hanna-Barbera: The Recorded History discusses the story and the people, including Walt Disney, behind their first recording with Gene Kelly and Jerry the mouse (from MGM’s 1945 Anchors Aweigh) and follows the changes in music and storytelling to Warner Bros’ 2021 hit feature, Tom and Jerry.

Recordings captured this power in a diversified and heretofore unexplored way. Hanna-Barbera recordings helped launch major names and behind-the-scenes talents in pop, rock, jazz and film music. Techniques developed at Hanna-Barbera influenced other studios, from Hollywood to Broadway.

Hanna-Barbera: The Recorded History cites some of the greatest names in the entertainment industry but also those whose contributions are long deserving of more recognition. It reveals creative aspects of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera rarely discussed: their musicality as it related to their animation, their knack for assembling memorable voices, sounds and music, and their approach to writing original scores and theme songs. It is a book brimming with exclusive anecdotes, surprising facts, and an astonishing library of creative work.

HANNA-BARBERA: THE RECORDED HISTORY Available in 2024 from University Press of MS

Well if this wasn't one of the best walks back in time I don't know what would be! SO much fun remembering and re-visiting some of the best cartoons and TV shows that are far behind us now but brought back alive through this conversation. This episode brought many smiles to my face so thank you, Jim and Greg, for this fantastic trip back to my youth.
