there are overrated things abt windows, mac osx, proprietary unix, even so-called fault tolerant mainframe systems. Lets turn the tables a while. i've had ppl complain 2 me abt their windows & mac systems. The windows ppl will say watt for? its so troublesome! The mac ppl will say, but mac is so cool. all my friends look up 2 me bec i run a mac! At times, i wanna tell them then shuddup & stop complaining. i'm a linux user & despite its limitations, i think its the coolest computing platform in the world!
ОтветитьPissed off a little about Firefox. It's the only browser that gives enough freedom to plugins to make internet usable. On mobile as well.
ОтветитьDo I need the latest stuff? No. I need my laptop to work when I turn it on. It's my tool, I earn money with it. It just needs it to work today like it did yesterday and last week.
ОтветитьThe videos where people feel they are pissed off, are mostly the most watched videos.
But yes all your points are valid. Even if I do feel a little bit .......
My one complaint about Linux is that despite Bottles and Wine saying it can run Windows Apps, they do not run Kindle. I had to buy a Kindle White paper to read the things I had already bought on Amazon. Other than that Linux does what it is supposed to do, it replaces the bogus Windows. It is faster and better in so many ways. Enough said.
ОтветитьSecurity through obscurity in Linux is breaking
ОтветитьThanks Matt, that made my hour! To say it made my day would be overrated :) 🤗
ОтветитьOn your point regarding being able to have the latest say drivers or kernel, while it is true that you can run them on practically any version of Linux that does not mean you won't have more bugs due to running it on a distro that has older packages. And if you are going to update that much stuff to quash bugs, why wouldn't you just run a rolling release at that point? Early adopters of new hardware (like me an my Arc A770 and now B580) stand to have a less broken experience on a rolling release, plus at this point Arch-based land is where I feel at home.
Regarding Firefox not being a good browser, somewhat agree. I would argue thanks to Manifest V3 the biggest argument for it is ad-blocking, as Mozilla is not letting Manifest V2 add-ons die. And with forks like Cachy Browser, Librewolf, Waterfox, etc you can have a version that caters a little more to your tastes. People refusing to give up Chromium-based browsers is why we're dealing with the fallout of Manifest V2 being dropped. Google has too much influence in regards to the web at this point and we need people making a concerted effort to hit them in the balls.
On suckless software, I think the issue is more that unless someone is more inclined to tinker they shouldn't be pushed so hard. Like, I love hyprland my WM and use it across my devices. However, I wouldn't even recommend it to most people because us tiling nerds are a niche within a niche within another niche. I don't think they're overrated because for those of us that love this stuff it's a godsend for productivity and scratching the itch of customization. People just sometimes get a little over-excited about things they are passionate about and don't always consider the audience they are talking to, so I don't really think they're overrated as much as over-hyped.
"You can review the code" should be rephrased as "Someone can review the code". It was always a little disingenuous. It's also not possible for a single person to review tens of millions of lines of code even if you are an experienced developer.
Also, the more I learn about Arch, the more annoyed I am about Arch.
Only time I ever hear anything about Mozilla, it’s always something about their W0k3 activism. I’d argue that that is their highest corporate priority
ОтветитьI use linux because it fits 99% of my needs and in most cases, I'm not at the mercy of a corporation trying to shove features I don't need into my computer.
ОтветитьMy main argument for Firefox is to not use any Chrome based browsers. They are about 80% right now I guess. I don't want Google to extend even more their monopoly about the web access. They also made recent restrictions on extensions blocking ads. I love LibreWolf and got Brave as a backup if something is not working properly. In general everything works fine. The worst issues I had was with Google meet and Teams. How strange...
ОтветитьVery fun and true lol ,😂❤
ОтветитьGood video. This is what honesty looks like.
ОтветитьFirefox has been my favorite browser for many years. I find that the Chromium's are susceptible to CPU Spikes. Chromium's are a little faster, but not enough for me to change.
ОтветитьTbh, I'd agree with pretty much everything here. If we're honest with ourselves, this is how things are. Doesn't mean they're bad, except Firefox (I mainly use it because frack Google and I use uBlock Origin; although supposedly PWAs are coming back so nice), it means these are just areas that need work or are oversold. Things can be nuanced, and for what's an annoyance for one is a pro for another and vice versa, and honestly that's half the reason most of us are here in the first place. :)
Ответить8 Most Underrated Things About Linux:
Linux
8 Most True Things About Linux...
... but still it is best option as OS.
Distro hopping is just searching for the defaults that suite you. Once you understand that just pick the most stable distro you like then start customizing.
ОтветитьAt last I found a honest commentary on linux on yt. I've been misled many times over the years, and each time I had a terrible time dealing with issues that the average home pc user should not deal with. "linux has improved so much, it's better than windows" - ughh... No, it isn't.
ОтветитьI agree with all what do you say
ОтветитьWhat a great video! Definitely one for your top 5. You wanted comments, here's mine. I hate that you always have a choice in Linux and I think “suckless” really sucks. The fact that I use a rolling release distro is my obsession. I always want bleeding edge. But I don't have to tell everyone that and I'm annoyed by all the people who do it differently. The point about Firefox and your own contradiction is very important to me. Firefox may develop more slowly. But maybe that's a good thing, because like distributions, maybe you don't always need that speed? What is more important is that Firefox is not based on Webkit. For that, the browser deserves as much credit as it can get.
ОтветитьI think the biggest positive of FOSS is that it will never die. You don't have to worry about something being unsupported in the future, because if it's popular enough, someone will likely continue development in a fork. Also, community. Proprietary & FOSS are both audited for security, and they both have security through obscurity, which isn't an argument.
ОтветитьThe overArching message here is there's a certain Linux distro he thinks is overrated. 😆
ОтветитьI DONT NEED THA NEWEST SHIT ON THA BLOCK JIGGA IM STILL ON IPHONE 11 AND I WONT SWITCH UNTIL IT STOPS GETTING SECURITY UPDATES DO YOU UNDERSTAND IM ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL MY PC HAS A GTX 970 CAUSE IM POOR AS SHIT AND IM NOT UPGRADING UNTIL THE LAST DAY WINDOWS 10 IS SUPPORTED
ОтветитьFirefox, on Linux x86_64 systems, IS good, not perfect, but really good!
If we are seeing bugs it's because we are not paying so much attention on Chrome's side. Chrome unfortunately is the market leader, it has the full power of Google's ad machine behind it and as such, more and more sites have little provision, if any, to render correctly in Firefox. That the devs must make special provisions to render correctly for the browsers they are targeting is a reality from the dawn of internet and it is not a Firefox's issue per se.
Firefox must survive the competition with Chrome. If we continue bashing the project with invalid arguments, it is not going to help.
> Linux is going to feel like Linux no matter what distro you're using
Yeah, that doesn't apply to NixOS.
all valid
Ответить"Linux is secure because nobody is using it": Linux is secure not because it's underused, but because of its inherent design features. It benefits from being simple, open-source, and Unix-based, which allows for robust security. The system is built with security in mind, adhering to Unix security best practices, although some exceptions exist, such as with Android and penetration-testing-focused Linux distributions.
ОтветитьI literally changed distro over the package manager.
Apt and pacman are so different, I wiped my entire machine, after not doing so for years, to get rid of apt. I do not like apt!
The AUR has saved my ass several times!
ОтветитьDistro hoping is definitely overrated. Just learn to customize your environment a little bit and you get what you want with basically any distro.
ОтветитьYou're partially right about the security point - in the desktop world Linux is less common so certain kinds of attacks are less likely. However on the server (extremely high value targets) Linux is very very popular. It's true that Linux does have security exploits, but they are usually less catastrophic than those on Windows for people running servers. (Broad generalization I know). Anyway Linux is definitely not "security through obscurity" in general. There are far better examples of that on obscure proprietary systems. Being the most popular open-source OS is the opposite of obscure.
ОтветитьMozzilla now admits it'll sell your data.
ОтветитьDaring to tell the truth?! Outrageous!
ОтветитьI have not had great experiences on Linux, however I also don't see it as a terrible OS. Just not very good for what I want to do with the level of skill I currently have and I lack the resources in time/energy/motivation to gain those skills. I honestly feel that most of the reasons most commonly listed on videos about the "top # reasons to switch to linux" over and over again are mostly overrated/overstated. Open-source, security, lower resources, etc. They're true, but not always as big of a deal as advertised or they come with caveats.
ОтветитьFor someone who speak about how much he likes Linux this guy every video is full of complaining about Linux but did this help Linux, not in a bit..
Ответитьfirefox is not linux, has nothing to do with linux
Ответить1st of all, i actually agree with most of watt u said abt SOME stuff being over-rated, at times i find it really galling bec such anti-climactic comments actually gives open-source nay sayers "ammunition" to shoot holes into open source. There is, however, 2x good reasons why rolling releases are favourable;
1. ALL OS, open source (inclusive) or proprietary at some point of time need 2 b re-installed bec of all the junk they pick up as 1 installs, uninstalls & upgrades software. For rolling releases, YOU as the owner of the hardware, get to choose WHEN u wanna do the reinstall.
2. U may buy a piece of hardware, eg AMD vid card that isn't quite yet supported by linux. The system will "automatically" upgrade itself when a new kernel with the driver eg 6.14, becomes available.
other than that, matt, i think everything u said was spot on, please do keep it up. i'm following u & asking my frieds 2 do likewise!
"you can just review the code bro its open source"
me pasting in commands i found in github from projects i only just found that day be like:
i knoiw what c is c is a letter lol i mean im learning python but still lol had to be funny
ОтветитьBeing honest and managing expectations of a potential new Linux user helps a lot.
Ответитьbased
ОтветитьI can't review the code, but it's easier to trust that a lot of people have. Unlike closed source where nobody but the developer actually know what it does.
ОтветитьPackage managers are over-rated. Eventually, with Linux you're going to run into a extracting a tarball at some point.
ОтветитьMatt's hidden title for the video "Fuck Arch Fanboys" lol
ОтветитьYou should daily drive a razor, homie.
