Big thanks to you both. So much fantastic advice. I had to pause video multiple times to add to my notes.
IMO you bounced of each other amplifying the points. An example of synergy where the whole is greater than a sum of the parts!
Embarrassed to admit I enrolled in AOD and never even logged in. My current day to day career is so time consuming that I shelved it. Chasing dreams after reaching peak adulthood is freaking hard😂
Ответитьabsolutely great video!
ОтветитьThis was awesome. Thanks very much! Need to watch this 100 times.
ОтветитьI was at a Missions conference a few weeks ago and I felt this overwhelming desire to tell the stories of these missionaries and humanitarians...Japan, Thailand, Brazil, Romania, Vanuatu, Mexico...and many more. Not long after I discovered your channel and have been soaking up as much info as possible, and I'm looking to just start shooting small documentary work locally to build up my skillset before I attempt to travel.
Anyway, I am terrified but excited and I love all the information from your channel!
How to find a mentor when you been through film school, screen writing school and acting school etc... and you feel like Now what? I worked with a commercial tv production company and I hated it.. there were of course times it was fun to drive out and do location scouting, and meet interesting people and places and take amazing video for this...
but the hierarchy, rudeness, unthankfulness, working from 5 am catching the sunset to midnight catching the sundown and sit and edit alone in your car and then next day get some arranged British jerk not even looking you in the eyes harassing your person and then want you to re-do all the work in another area without even saying great, thanks... no, people should not have narcissistic work places .. quick money yes, but horrible mental health work place.. commercial film go fast and everyone is greedy...
is not my way or person to harass others lower than me in a production hierarchy... I like to work by my heart and be efficient in choosing the right shots etc...
but when, how to start your own business, ?
how to find a mentor that can help you get started for real so you do not just start filming things but have a functional way that works and leads to distribution and producing what you set off to achieve and getting your story actually shown somewhere where they feel happy to know you and your story and ready to pay you honestly for doing it?!
I feel is sooo easy to be used by all these commercial tv production companies because you are a hard worker and know how to swallow their crap at the end of the day..
but is not right...
I need to find the right people, I did a lot of human rights work in Asia and USA but 90% no pay, and am an educated journalist as well... so I know how to do things well..
as well as I have a serious conservatory acting and directing training behind me.
I got the intellect but no clue of the business side of all this.
I do not know how to start my own business and how to find the right people for
serious documentary work and make money of it...
I feel lost after film school to be honest...
where to turn now?
is there a network of people that done it and can help you into this business so one can get established oneself?
thanks for hearing me out, and hope to get a bit guided to where to go so one end up learning on ones own level and not from a beginner level, but on the level on actually is at in this period of life if you understand how I mean...
thanks!
I knew by 1983 (9yo) that I could take better photos than the adults weilding cameras around me.... at 49 yo, this hasn't changed and has been a lifetime pursuit and occasionally supports me. 3 years ago, I had maxed out what my dslr could record and was like.... time to pivot, and get serious, also what is an fx3, and shut up and take my money (apparently all my money because i haven't owned a car over $500 bucks since)
ОтветитьThanks guys makes alot of sense
ОтветитьLol I am just starting out😂😂😂😂😂😂
ОтветитьIt's awkward how Mark is also supposed to be talking to you, but he is so into talking to the camera
Ответитьgreat video! love hearing about the process
ОтветитьThis is very refreshing to hear. Not just the nods to Ontario’s late HS comms programs. But also the career shift touch points and just generally getting into the right headspace and underway, rather than creating barriers for oneself. Thank you for sharing guys.
ОтветитьGreat advice! I did already get to the conclusion that in order to make the movies I really, really want to do (fantasy adaptations of my favourite indie authors), I need to make and learn on movies that I can actually make (one is about my husband’s martial arts story, the other about renovating a 100yo courthouse we bought last year), I kept trying to make at least the short films squeezed in between fantasy - which turned out to be quite hard, finding a concept that works well on no-budget level. But I never thought about short documentaries! It really set me on fire, thinking of all the interesting little topics that are all around me, and I could make a cute little short about them.
Ответитьman, this is money!!! so valuable!
ОтветитьIt’s hilarious seeing my community college and a local shopping strip mall for the portion where they talking about not having to fly far to tell good stories.
ОтветитьGreat advice. Thanks.
ОтветитьDo you cover also legal stuff depending on the country where you shooting. especially if you shoot closer small group/individuals? any good video about that?
ОтветитьI wonder why so many north americans wear those hat's. In europe only children and ghetto people wear it. Workin adults usually laugh about it. In old days when people where wearing real hats in europe they took them down if they came into a room as well.
ОтветитьThe way Canadian Filmakers/Content Creators support each other is amazing to me. It seems like most channels in this genre are Canadians. You guys seem to really back each other like a community. I h8 to say this but in my experience there seems to be a lack of this in the U.S.
Idk Maybe its just me...
GREAT ADVICE
ОтветитьYou guys rock
Ответитьwhat camera do you guys recommend?
ОтветитьYou two are my inspiration. Filmmaking is a side hustle for now but I want to make it my career choice and both of you guys channels popped up recently so I’ll dive into them for guidance. Thank you so much guys! Hope I get to look back and thank you guys for being that spark that started my journey and one day get t know y’all 🙏🏾❤️
Ответитьi need help learning how to narrate my hiking trips. i never have a story and just play music.
ОтветитьI didn't know who Mark is until this video ❤
Ответитьyou guys are awesommmmmmmmmmmmme
ОтветитьWeird vibe between u tooo😅 mark works alone to much. Needs to learn how to be a guest.
ОтветитьThis is such eyes opening, no more excuses 😮
ОтветитьAwww. Guy love!
ОтветитьCheers so much all fantastic simple advice that is the norm however I believe the first thing one should do is find your look/ style/colours/light natural and artificial that you are happy with and then build from that it's what I'm going to do 😊❤
Ответитьi really hope the film you couldnt mention was called the Locker Stalker. if not, thats a missed opp.
Ответитьfilming is complicated at the best of times when dealing with audio
ОтветитьI’m 70 and just retired from ranch and farm sales. When I started in the business there were no “videographers” out in ranch country where I live. So…I bought a Nikon D90 and started making my own ranch/farm marketing videos. I had been a newspaper photographer back in the days of B&W so I also took all my own photos. We had to hire helicopters and remove the doors to get photos and videos of larger ranches. Then came GoPro cameras and I hired a guy who used a powered glider and we duct-taped a camera on a mount on each of his knees. We called them our “seasick videos” and I edited them in iMovie. Then came my Lumix cameras (Gh3-Gh6) and a DJI Magic 2 Pro. And Final Cut Pro. Now that I am retired I hope to use my equipment for anything but real estate marketing videos. That market is overpopulated and crazy. I am thinking of documenting the people who raise our food. I love farmers and ranchers and the work they do is hard and technical. Sorry to write War and Peace….I just wanted to say how much I value your content. Jim is Oregon
ОтветитьAwesome video guys !
ОтветитьThanks Guys!
ОтветитьThank you!
ОтветитьGreat interview. I’ve learned so much from Mark as a AOD student. Just found your channel subbed.
ОтветитьThe one day film idea is brilliant.
ОтветитьCheers boyz great video would love if you guys do a video on how to get a network on board.
ОтветитьMan, you need to make podcasts, it was soo good and soo interesting! Just like this Video, it was just perfect, please make podcasts
Ответитьabout making a documentary. do you pay the characters? what's in it for them?
ОтветитьThis is so much learning in one video Luc and Mark! Have finally made and uploaded my 2nd video (under two minutes), hopefully better quality and more content soon.
ОтветитьHigh score 💯: Yesterday I found your channel, watched one clip & subscribed > today I've (so far...) watched 8 of your clips. Now I met Mark and subscribed as well. Tomorrow morning I'm going to buy 4 packs of coffee and lock the door for the entire week. Next sunday my eyes & ears will be bleeding and steam will come out of my nose. But I will have learned so incredibly much from both of you! Nice to meet you both 🤘
ОтветитьGood stuff! And greetings from Finland! We don't have mountains here and rarely eat canned fish, but all our films are Finnished! 😂
ОтветитьAt first you watch this and think... wait... is this CGI. Then you realize they are not in fact the same person.
Ответить
