This reminds me of a story in the gaming community, specifically for Genshin Impact.
In 2023, Wanderer was released as a playable character, and at the same time a 2D animated cutscene for the new questline was released, showing a storybook fable rendition of his past, where he was depicted as a black kitten.
Last year he was included as an important character for the summer event, under the name "Hat Guy".
Chinese "fans", angry because he was a former villain and doesn't deserve the spotlight (despite him showing remorse and actual character development when he wanted to erase his entire existence, as if he never existed at all) killed black cats irl, and posting images of their corpses, and if I remember correctly, tagging Mihoyo (the studio that made Genshin Impact) in said posts.
Being a follower of Mihoyo/Hoyoverse games, I was devastated to find out people did this when it happened, especially to express hate towards a villain, since they were clearly no better.
sidenote: I dread when they add another playable villain. The villains are some of my favorites and I'd love if they made them playable, but the way that people reacted to Wanderer makes me worried what they'll do next.
