“Trance” is a genre of electronic dance music that was developed in Germany in the 1990s. The tempo of classic trance music is generally 125–150 bpm, which is a bit faster than house music. Trance music incorporates many other music genres such as house, techno, pop, new age, ambient, and even classical music. This genre can be divided into a large number of sub-genres. Major sub-genres include “classic trance”, “acid trance”, “progressive trance” and “uplifting trance”.

Trance music is characterized by repeating melodic synthesizer phrases and is usually more melodic than techno music. Within the genre of trance music, harder styles such as “psytrance” developed. The “harder” styles usually feature a beat above 150 bpm. Another characteristic of trance music is that it uses dynamics to a far greater extent than other electronic music. A mid-song break in the middle of a song is very common in this genre of music. The melody stands alone while rhythm tracks are faded out and return a few moments later. Vocals in trance music are usually sung by a female vocalist with a strong soaring voice. Some DJs who are known to play trance music on a regular basis are Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Paul van Dyk, and Armin van Buuren.

A different type of trance music, generally referred to as “uplifting trance”, is very popular as well. Uplifting trance is characterized by longer buildups and breakdowns and more easily identifiable melodies. Artists of this genre are Tiesto, Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Darren Tate, and Ferry Corsten, who all became famous as producers and also as re-mixers. Other artists associated with this genre of electronic dance music include Dash Berlin, Above & Beyond, Markus Schulz, ATB, and Sander van Doorn.
