There are apartments like that in Los Angeles. It's just that most of us can't afford them. Also That's not the kind of snow that you find on Hollywood Boulevard

This was incredible. We were nearly falling out of the chair howling in the third act. Reckon this is one of the best cinema experiences. So so visceral

Best film of the year! 9.5/10. Fantastic performances, one of Demi Moore’s best performance. The score, cinematography, story… it was extremely gory, gruesome, darkly funny. Margaret Qualley was great. The movie was a bit too long, a bit tiresome, and repetitive. But one of the best films of the year nonetheless.

The first 110 minutes of this film are perfection. We’re talking one of the greatest films ever made.

Unfortunately, as soon as you see “THREE MONTHS LATER” for me it takes a sharp nosedive down into ‘you’ve jumped the shark and lost me completely’ territory.

At that point, it goes from being a seismic 5 star film to a “ok you’ve kinda ruined it” 3 star one.

That first 110 minutes though. Wow.

From a brainwashed hippie (OUTIH) to a sexpot lesbian (Drive Away Dolls) to a struggling mom living in poverty (Maid) to now this, Margaret Qualley is still early in her career but has already chosen some very cool and interesting roles that show her range. She is fast becoming of my favorite actresses working today.

It reminded me also of a female version of the lighthouse , especially during the fight scene and how the actors get into a tug of war of power and control, and just like lighthouse takes place mostly in one location

I loved this flick. It's essentially an exploitation arthouse movie and it's a huge miracle that it even got made. I agree that it went bananas in the end, but it's one of my favorites of the year so far. The practical eft were brilliant -- a mix of The Thing, Basket Case, and The Fly. This would be an amazing double feature with Infinity Pool. Good stuff.

Demi Moore is promised this younger self. But she continues in her old body and this complete stranger emerges as the young version. Demi Moore is supposed to be both versions but it seems she still identifies only as her old self.

Eating lunch at Chipotle before seeing The Substance was a bad choice..."MONSTRO ELISASUEEEEEEEEE!!!"

*great job by Demi, Margaret, Quaid, the SFX Make-up crew, the Foley crew in this relentless body horror epic!

I just saw Substance today and again, like Strange Darling, it was ending the next day, but I got the senior discount. It's a beautiful film that definitely toys with the male gaze. I haven't had much time to process it but I realized the way humans age, because we don't have fur like cats. You can see all the flaws we have with our skin. Freckles, moles, birthmarks, wrinkles, and this film pushes that to the extreme, and further! I have great admiration for Demi Moore now❤. How cool!

Great movie. You guys got one right 😛 It's a little long and could have benefited from some trimming, but it was still fascinating. Demi Moore's best performance ever. I'm jaded when it comes to movie gore, so I was able to look past it and allow the comedy to hit me. It's really funny underneath all the blood.

Saw it yesterday. I agree with Alonso about the ending. If there'll be a spoiler discussion, I could say more but I'd say when the 3rd version of them was getting ready in the blue dress I was expecting a fade to black.
After liking Demi so much in the Brat Pack movie, I'm glad she's getting this kind of chance. She's looking so great!

Oh God this was like the Love Lies Bleeding ending all over again! What's with these directors and ruining their movies by suddenly making it thirty times goofier right at the end. No, this is a thumbs down, it was swimming along at an 8/10 and totally blew it with the last 20 mins or so, 5/10 at best! Infuriating to see a fumble like that

I did enjoy the film glad to see Demi Moore working again, she has always had that it factor that made her a true movie star. And the body and face look great at 50 plus.

Not gonna lie that third act almost took me out lol and I had to close my eyes to get through it.

Grulll I got the point it was rough. Still good 👍🏾

To me, The Substance is The Shining of this era. Very difficult to watch, a psychologically disturbing movie. Just calling it a body horror is doing disservice to it despite It's deliberate in your face attitude. We've entered into an era where Horrors like these should b in the Oscar consideration, the special or practical effects, sound design, cinematography, production design, acting, direction - i can't see hw u can ignore this piece of art and acclaim the rest of the Oscar bait stuff. Very difficult movie, atrociously bold, stunningly executed. After Titane We've got another body horror masterpiece. I hv these few movies that gave me similar viscera - Titane
The Neon Demon
Sick of myself
Men
Love lies bleeding
carrie
Starry Eyes
Black Swan
Possessor

I like this movie but the first scene with the star is very telling when it comes to the craftmanship. It is brilliant until they drop the disgusting food on it.

The whole movie is like that. 90% brilliant, then they take it an extra 10% to jam it in and instead looses me.

Also, the quick cuts and the slow scenes makes it feels so long.

Ends up at 3/5 for me.

I FINALLY got to see it on the big screen and never was a film more worthy of all the effort I had to make in order to avoid everything a could about it, especially given the sensation it has provoked !!! Has ever a casting been more perfect than Demi in this one??? Her own personal past struggles bring an even further level of depth for those of us who have followed her entire career!! Yes, agree about the ending but it's a minor minor quibble and I think we all agree that it totally earns the drawn-out ending which certainly underscores the degree of inner violence such unrealistic beauty standards often creates in women (and men too the film also cleverly touches on) and how that "sprays" out into society staining all those around us!!!
