Okay like, I love this song and I agree that it definitely has a lot of meaning. I just didn't realize that wasn't common knowledge lol. Idk I'm autistic so maybe that's why I just kinda "got it" right off the bat despite being a 6 year old suburban white kid and...well....pretty far removed from any kinda banana labour. But i remember listening to it the first time (not from Beetlejuice actually, but I think KidSongs? Was that show real or a fever dream? Or perhaps it was that my Catholic grandmother had a scANDALous crush on Harry Belafonte lolollll), and thinking, "huh, this sounds like funny words like ee-i-ee-i-o in the Old MacDonald song, but I think it's kinda more sad cause Old MacDonald probably wants to be on his farm but I don't think this guy wants to pick bananas all night."

I didn't "get" aLL of it at six years old, like, for example, I didn't really understand the concept of working all night on a drink of rum until about 16 😂😂 I think I'd just learned about writing tally marks in school, so and I specifically remember asking my mum, "what on earth is a tally man? Is it like the Whether Man in the Phantom Tollbooth?"
"No, he just counts the bananas and uses tallies."
"Oh."

So like idk man, is that autism or is that just paying attention to the lyrics? 🤣 so weird to figure this out later in life and have these moments where i realize apparently my brain doesnt work like everyone else 🤣
