Mathias Brandt, director of "Integrated Urban Development in Ukraine" project, explains what does integrated approach to city planning mean, what kind of specialists are needed in Ukraine today to manage city development projects.
Integrated Urban Development as a tool for mobilizing citizens

Cities are places of knowledge and creativity. They are the driving forces behind economic and social development, and will continue to be so in the future. The years ahead will be challenging for urban development in Ukraine: the growing social and spatial inequalities, the continuing high level of unemployment in many cities, the demographic and social changes affecting urban society, and also climate change will make great demands on the ability of cities to shape and control development. German-Ukrainian development cooperation, together with Swiss Government have started to initiate new planning models of how to build and develop cities.

In Chernivtsi, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia and Poltava citizens will be given the opportunity to express their views on the future of their hometowns: How should public spaces be designed in the future? What is the role of humans in urban jungles among all these cars? How should new districts for living and working be designed? Will we be able to have cities without the daily traffic jam, noise and pollution? Will cars remain dominating in public spaces? Or are we able to create cities that are more suitable for human beings needs? Safe for children, and with good and easy access to social and educational services?

Mathias will inform about his programme and explain, what he expects from cooperation with CANactions and its educational program - Advanced Studies in Integrated Urban Development 2016-2017.
