You earned my dislike, and this comment the second you pulled out the shoe and if you’re going to compare a baseline M3 max chipset MacBook Pro with the opposite into the spectrum you should’ve got the best and the worst and compare the 128 GB ram version to the baseline. Nobody wants to watch a video, titled slowest car Grandtheft auto auto versus fastest car, and Grandtheft auto auto auto. and then when the video opens is exactly right under the half fastest car in the game that they’re saying it’s the fastest nobody’s gonna watch that man

500 $ for more ram and cores is a good deal if you need the performance. Ram will be crucial if you do a lot of heavy workflows and GPU apps. I got the M3max 16" 16 40 48gb ram and it's great. Software will be more optimized for this chip in the coming months. And yes the fan kicks in faster on the Max. I have istat Menu custom fan curve to max out the fans to keep things cooler and less throttling.

The only reason I didnt get the m3max max is that I truly, honestly believe I would never be touched by a girl with a 48gb of ram.

Overkill

Hi Max you've always done awesome work testing latest apple gears! I'm looking to upgrade to M3 Max but the one the only issue still keeps me from making the purchase is RAM. I'm currently using an 2019 intel i9 MBP with 64GB ram running Catalina, and iStat menu shows 50% RAM is already eaten up based on a 30-day statistics. Therefore I'm believe I need more RAM than 64GB - 96GB should be enough and 128GB might be overkill: the reason is (1) with the intel Mac the AMD graphic has its own VRAM while the M3 unifies VRAM and system RAM which I guess it means you need a little greater unified RAM than the intel models (2) taken into consideration growing RAM needs for future Mac apps. Therefore may I ask that how much unified RAM, the 16/40 and 14/30 core M3 Max you tested have, respectively? The the most stressful scenario for GPU with my work is using Davinci Resolve to edit multiple 4K ProRes footage (including editing/color grading/a little basic fusion /a little basic fairlight but may including multiple audios), then deliver to H264/H265 final product. Could you kindly advise on what config I should get - I already have 4 options in mind: A. 16/40 core w/ 64G B RAM16/40 core w/ 128GB C. 14/30 core with 96GB RAM

Hi Max about video editing: I'm not sure how many time lines there were in the FCPX. IMHO the best way to test the performance/stress of the Mac is: Using Davinci Resolve editing a 4+ timelines of 4K+ videos and then export to an H264/H265 final product -- the FPS at delivery and time estimate for the delivery shows how good your Mac is at video editing because IMO the exporting process stresses the computer the most - CPU-wise and GPU-wise.

You always refer to the 14 core chip as the "binned" one. I thought it's the other way around, where the higher performing chips are the binned ones?

Also, the video editing portion of this is not really a good comparison… Final Cut does all the rendering while in the timeline, not at the final export, so really no matter if u used 8k footage or 240p footage, the export times will be the same, it’s only relying on the encoder like u mentioned. Should have maybe done the video editing test with premiere or resolve, but I get it, u use Final Cut so that’s what u used for the video. Just want everyone to know, if u edit in resolve or premiere, there is indeed a difference between the 30 and 40 core gpu models… I’ve owned a 16 inch 30 core and now have the 14 inch 40 core… trust me, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!

I'm a gamer that does work - I went with the 40. That FPS difference is MASSIVE. In time as more demanding games arrive, that FPS is going to make all the difference when you're above 60fps or below 60fps. In a few years, you're going to wish you paid that extra $500.

The $500 cost shouldn’t be of concern to professionals who understand how the cost will be amortized based on their utilization rate as a factor of projected usable lifespan (of the 16c/40c MBP M3 Max).

It would be foolish for even a marginally successful contractor or business concern not to spend the additional $500!!

Except if you need more than 96 gb of ram, then the 16 core makes sense. In that config with 1tb apple storage standard in the 14 inch flavor it is 100 bucks cheaper than a similarly configured Mac Studio. The m3 max trounces the M2 Ultra by a little too, plus you get a keyboard, trackpad and display out of the bargain. In order to justify the Mac Studio you would need at least a Magic Mouse and keyboard included to be competitive.

At least BB is having really good deals at the moment so I saved $650 on the base 16 core M3 Max (there were rebates on pretty much the entire line-up).

Could your include a test for training and inference of ML models (LLMs and LMMs in particular)? I would be very interested in the performance difference. This is particularly relevant to me, as a 20% time difference in a 20/30 seconds test would mean a lot, if I run a training of inference for multiple hours. And yes, I would usually do this on a different machine, but sometimes I need to do this on the go.
Thanks a lot for the comparison!

I know it has 12 performance cores, but if it had 128gb of ram would it still cap at 326 tracks? Or is this model maxed out? My bad if it is, that would answer my question.
