Why is this in the news? Why do you absolute bots care about Facebook going down for 5 hours?

So to summarise (and show my age): they were still in the phone book, but someone had knocked the phone off the hook.

Professor hasnt mentioned that on the router the BGP route has the lowest priority - much bigger have the internal routing protocol routes, local administrative routes have the highest protocol by default - so instead of 5 minute period for checking the configuration the thing that could help are other (lower) level of locally set up route advertisement between their closest peers, other Fallback priorities and so on.

Remember that it could also be an external or even internal complicated attack as facebook is a leftie company and many people doesnt want another socialist company in their world - already they have the leftie state administering their country.

I don't have Facebook, I don't have Instagram and I only use WhatsApp to stay in contact with my family. The only reason I knew Facebook had a blackout was because my sister called me instead of send me a message on WhatsApp.

TL;DR They The network went down because of a config error.

I have been wondering why this one node with the AS number 3320 ist still connected to Facebook during the outage. It seems like the number belongs to a German ISP (Deutsche Telekom AG). As far as I know there aren't even any Facebook Datacenters in Germany, could someone explain how it is still connected?

One of the things that scare me the most about cloud is that more and more infrastructure (critical) infrastructure are being concentrated in a few companies data centers. This is sort of counter to why the internet works with decentralized control. (With the exception of DNS and even that has a 7 day window of limping along before it really breaks. ) I'm dreading the day of a major outage at Google, M$ or Amazon. (Or all three as the chance are that something serious enough to take down Google will also take down the other two).

Loved this analysis. Watched it at the time and just rewatched it in light of the optus outage here. Dr Steve is there any chance you could take a look at that using the same tool to see if it's the same problem. Thx

A good analogy on this could be that, Facebook accidently took the sim-card out of their phone, dropped it on the floor and had trouble finding it. :)
