Lose the drain screen, then when you are cleaning out don't worry about how much silt goes in. After you let a good rinse happen, stick the hose in the pipe and run it full on for about 20 seconds the pipe will never clog. I have a similar system though more complex running water on one leg about 50 feet though 1.25 inch pipe. Been running a year now never had a clog that didn't just pop out soon as you put a bit of pressure on it. Also I set mine with strait valves on the drain pipe and no need to go into the water with your hands, open the valve and it flows.

In your system, lose the plug, just stick a valve dry fit on the pipe in the hole. Then open to drain and close to hold. Very simple.

what do you feed them? Im curious because of the title saying 'permaculture' meaning that probably you feed them efficiently
