In 1706 Turin had been besieged by the Franks for many months.
The Duke of Savoy Vittorio Amedeo II came to the Superga hill to
assess the positions of the French enemies. Here there was a pylon
with the statue of the Mather of Jesus (Madonna, Our Lady).
The duke asked Our Lady to help the few and weak
piedmontese soldiers to win the final battle against the French.
He promised to build on Superga hill a great Church (basilica)
dedicated to the Our Lady in case of victory.
A few days later the French were defeated and Turin was freed
from the siege.
In 1716 the Duke Vittorio Amedeo began the construction of the
church on Superga hill, which was opened in 1732.
In this chapel, called the chapel of the vote, was brought the original
statue of the Madonna who gave the grace to the Duke.
