How Long Do VHS Tapes Last? : Digitize Your Old Tapes ASAP!

When people talk about old video tapes (or recording tape in general) one of the most frequent questions is "how long will tapes last in storage before they deteriorate?". Many people have many different opinions about this, but I do find that most people agree that many tapes start to degrade after 10-25 years.

Of course, storage is a very important factor. Tapes will last much longer if they are stored in a climate controlled environment.

In this video, I focus on VHS tapes. Of course, millions of people around the world still have a countless number of VHS tapes from the 80s and 90s that are gathering dust. It is always a good idea to digitize any valuable recordings, sooner than later. If you have old tapes from the 80s, there is a chance that they are still playable, but if so, they should be digitized as soon as possible.

I have many old tapes that are almost 40 years old. From my experience, I notice that many of these tapes are still playable, however they definitely show their age. Often the video quality is quite fuzzy. And often the sound is very, very quiet. In some cases, VHS tapes will actually start to rot, and are basically unplayable.

I posted a video quite some time ago where I spoke about a simple device that enables you to connect your VCR to your laptop, and enables you to easily digitize all your old video tapes. I will post a link to that device at the end of this video. I also plan to do a future video where I show step by step exactly how to use this device.
