Pretty much everyone knew that they weren't lesbians. If they were they had the most solid relationship in music history to say together for 3 albums. Most musicians can't stay together for 2 years! I was even in HS when they were big and NO ONE thought they were lesbians, I guess it was younger than HS age and maybe older people? Everyone that were buying their albums knew they weren't though.

I guess this is an old video so I dunno why I bother commenting. I guess the take away from Tatu is that the world is grey. Good on them for standing up for lesbian rights! Good on them for trying to help that cause in Russia. 14 year olds being marketed in this way is a bit sketchy. Comments made years later are sketchy. The funny thing is I doubt her opinion there was really her true feelings either. Being a willing participant in a cynical attempt to market yourself as one thing when the truth is the opposite demonstrates a willingness to say what is needed to advance oneself. In the broader context of the Ukranian show, it wouldn't shock me that her backflip was trying to atone for past "sins" in an attempt to land work in an environment which, as you said, people are blackballed for mere rumours of homosexuality. So I am not even sure if she believes the stuff she's saying. But it's out there in the public and I would be interested to know if she picked up work after that. That's my feelings on the matter. A lot of grey cynicism and a desire for money. Some good came from it, though in the grand scheme of things they made fk all difference. Very grey outcome.

tATu was a huge part of my adolescence. Growing up the main two things I associated with Russia were lesbians and cosmonauts. At that point I never would have thought we'd be where we are today.

i won't deny that there presence did improve lgbt rights a bit but i really don't think it was their intention, they just wanted money and to be famous.

Being a bi 2002 baby, i was pretty much “raised” by these two in a sense. I fell in love with them and their music. Initially I was upset about Yulia’s comments, until I got a thought that maybe Russia’s corrupt government had her make that statement. Ever since t.A.T.u. became a thing, Russia’s government pretty much wanted them gone. I still will forever be a t.A.T.u. fan, I hope that one day they can release one more album before they truly ride off into the sunset.

The only difference I see between lesbians and gay people that made Julia make that statement is that she profited from acting like the first one, but not the other. Regardless of how influential they are, and how much they’ve done for the lgbtq+ community, that doesn’t change the fact that she views being gay as being “less of a man,” so she probably sees lesbianism affecting femininity in the same way. Both of which are untrue, by the way. But the way she’s okay with lesbians but not gay people says a lot. It’s completely hypocritical and reeks of pretentiousness. I usually say that real people can’t queerbait, but them being lesbians/sapphic was purely an act for marketing and does not represent their actual selves, and that’s textbook queerbaiting.
