I'm an established artist and this is an excellent video on your process for drawing portraits. Personally I find this method easier than the Loomis method. I just can't get my head around it at all. Pun intended. Subbed and thumbed up. Thanks.

I’m so glad to find someone who draws in the style I’d like to learn, who also does great tutorials, rather than just filming the drawing process silently! I’d love to see a series of videos on drawing each elements of the face in a more sketchy style like this. Lips, nose, eyes, etc. I find that the majority of tutorials jump right to a highly rendered realistic level accomplished through really skilled shading. And it seems like a beginner couldn’t hope to accomplish that as a first step. And to be honest I don’t really want to right now. At least not yet. I like this style more. No one seems to teach the fundamentals elements like that using actual lines! That’s what I’d love to learn. Based on this video, I think you could teach it really well.

I've watch so many videos about drawing faces and I can't understand how do they draw the head out of thin art and just block-in the head, but your video makes every step so clear and easy to understand. TKS SO MUCHHH

I see you do the overall shape of the face/head BEFORE you denote, on your 'axis line' , the accurate measurements (spacing) of where the forehead (top), brow/eye line, bottom of nose, mouth, and bottom of chin will be. That would help to more accurately define the outer contours (the line shape) of the head/face, because, that line (the outer face shape) relates to the spacings of the 'points' mentioned. Seems a bit backwards to me, to do the head/face shape first. In short, getting the spacings correct (FIRST) would more accurately help in defining (drawing) the head/face outer contour lines (overall shape).

This is a good technique for a specific situation, where you're working from a photo reference that you have on a screen you can draw on and you're drawing the same size as the photo on the screen. Do you have a process for drawing from life, or a photo reference on a screen that's a different size?

Will practicing like this help with getting better at live drawing (without the line guides)? I want to train my brain to be able to draw without any guides, but I really need to work on getting better at proportions & likeness

Great description. I wanted to hear your views to compare and improve upon my own ‘Barguesque’ technique). Also there’s a keystone shape between the eyes above the nose (a trapezoid with the long straight edge at the top and the short straight edge at the bottom) - this establishes the eye sockets accurately and are simple lines to measure. It also establishes tilt of the head.

This is interesting.I don't recall anything like this in art school, only my teachers implications of the Rosary that, "like Art, helps to solve personal problems" I started painting in oils in 1950 because of encouragement from my parents , mostly land and seascapes. My favourite artist was Robert Wood,. Around 1980 I believe devine intervention suddenly provided me with a knack for portraiture while listening to Majesty on Hearts of Space during an ice storm. Overwhelmd, I fell to my knees, in awe of what I believed God had accomplished thru little, undeserving me, with a set of recently acquired pastels.I then began studying under John Howard Sanden , learning his method of painting by blocking out the head and " drawing with paint, alla prima," as opposed to filling in a drawing. Sanden was the first I heard say "draw as much as you can, because in portrature, a miss is as good as a mile". The reason I'm typing this is i cant help but wonder what would happen if any of you would skip the time I explained I wasted , grab one of Sandens books and start practicing. If your library doesn't have any, they are now laughingly inexpensive on line.Oh, btw, the best tool I know of to check your work for accuracy is a hand mirror. Just reverse the iimages and inacuracies will be glaringly obvious! I hope this works for some of you. 😍
