The Dead Sea, which is in Hebrew: יָם הַמֶּלַח‎ (Sea of Salt), stretches along the Jordan Valley between Israel and the Kingdom of Jordan. With a surface level of 430 meters (1,412 feet) below sea level, the Dead Sea is the earth's lowest point. Being the deepest hypersaline lake in the world with its water 9.6 times saltier than normal Seawater, the Dead Sea attracts "medical tourists" from all over the world to its health-generating virtues, while it makes swimming more like floating.

Known as one of the world's first health resorts, the Dead Sea has always been the supplier of many products, from asphalt for Egyptian mummification, to perfumes and exquisite fruit during Bible days, and to chemicals and fertilizers today. Appearing in various biblical references from the early Canaanite period to the Kings of Israel, the Dead Sea region, which is mostly lifeless due to its intense chemical makeup, is prominent in Ezekiel's prophecy describing a River of Life flowing from Jerusalem, saying, "… This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed … There will be a very great multitude of fish because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. It shall be that fishermen will stand by it from Ein Gedi to Ein Eglaim (Dead Sea shores); they will be places for spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish of the Great Sea, exceedingly many." (Ezekiel 47:7-10).
