First, you did NOT have the right tools. An orbital sander is the correct tool for this project. The little mouse sanders are for detail work only, that's part of the reason why it took so long to sand the desk. It would also be advisable to use a paint stripper to cut through the clear coat on the furniture, before sanding. I would also use a much higher quality paint brush to apply the polyurathane.
