Located in South Dakota, Badlands National Park is a stunning landscape of rugged canyons and layered rock formations. Known for its dramatic scenery, this park spans over 244,000 acres of eroded buttes and grasslands, offering a glimpse into millions of years of Earth’s history.

The Badlands were formed through a combination of deposition and erosion over the past 69 million years. Layers of sedimentary rock and volcanic ash were deposited, and over time, wind and water carved out the iconic formations we see today.

The Badlands are one of the world’s richest fossil beds, containing ancient mammal fossils like sabertooth cats and three-toed horses. It’s home to bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The park is part of the ancestral lands of the Lakota Sioux, who call it “Mako Sica,” meaning “land bad.” Badlands National Park is also a designated Dark Sky Park, perfect for stargazing.
