I have been a service (people) leader for over 20 years and do a few interviews... regardless what side of the table i sit, "tell me about yourself" is my go to opener and the results are huge for many reasons. Aside from the fact that many love to speak about themselves and will give you way more than you had ever hoped for... it shows interest... or even better yet, it shows you care about them. Its a great ice breaker and relationship builder. I find when leading people, the more you care about them and genuinely show interest in them the more willing they are to drive results for your cause and perform in their position. You nailed this.
