Our first night outside of Baldur's Gate, Level 4 maybe, and our first random camp encounter. The rogue keeping watch failed his perception check, so the 2 owlbears got the jump on him. All four hits landed including one claw attack critting. He went down, but the rest of the party woke up and got him back up and we finished them off. Both the player and his character now added fear of Owlbear to their flaws! Became an instant campaign joke!

in your story about your players going off the rails entirely and raiding the tower How did that work out for them did any of them die. I think I'd make it so that at least one of them died unless they made some incredible roll to avoid death. But that's just how I roll (Think I'll let you get away with derailing the campaign do you? Ha I don't think so... LOL)

You're not supposed to be telling a story as a DM. The story emerges through your players role-playing their characters. They tell you the story. If not, you're just writing a novel, and they're along for the ride.
