I don't follow gymnastics until the Olympics come around, so hopefully someone who is a bigger fan can answer my question. Why do coaches stand next to the girls when they are on bars? When they fall they never catch them and they likely couldn't react fast enough to catch them even if they tried.

they're not really to catch them since it could hurt even more but to turn them in the fall if needed - to protect head etc
