Labors of Love Podcast Special Edition: On March 13th I had the opportunity to testify at the Connecticut State Capitol along with Rep. Robyn Porter, Doula Cynthia Hayes and others. We spoke in support of S.B. 986 an Act to Protect Maternal Health. After listening to hours of testimonies and the questioning that followed it was evident that an alarming disconnect exists between the decision makers and us, the ones directly and significantly impacted.
We are seeking to have a solutions oriented conversation with those working in direct support of BIPOC mothers and babies, BIPOC Midwives and Doulas. Thank you for accepting my invitation to join Rep. Porter and me in a virtual roundtable discussion. Our aim is to continue to lend voice to OUR experience and offer clear solutions to how WE move the needle.
∞Here are some questions to ponder (asked by Committee members during the hearing):
∞Are the disproportionate occurrences of Black women and babies dying during childbirth due to genetics, the environment, not going to the doctors?
∞If there are already barriers in healthcare, how likely are Black mothers to utilize the support of a Doula? How do we bridge the gap?
∞What is a doula and what is their role in the pregnancy, labor, delivery, postpartum process?
∞How do we support and ensure an increase in the number of BIPOC Midwives and Doulas that truly desire to be a part of the solution?
