This poor girl and she had parents that sound like they are on drugs this is what happens when hippies have children they try to use them to make money off of them this lady should be locked the fuck up for life in a looney bin

That, my friend, is a straw man. He's not saying kids should be locked in cages, he's not even implying that. He's stating the obvious that it is irrational to put a seven year-old in a plane as a "pilot". She wasn't even the pilot, anyway. It was all a big publicity stunt once you get down to the bottom of it.

Here's why: If she had not been a child trying to set a record, there wouldn't have been the aggressive flying schedule, the media attention, and the pressure to "beat the storm" that fateful day. The PIC was a human being (fatigued), and unfortunately, was not the first pilot to screw up when put under pressure. He clearly did not have adequate training on decision making. Inadequate rest, bad weather = do no fly! But even professional airline pilots sometimes have made the same error.

Sitting on a plane with experienced pilots is safer than sitting in a car! Take a look at their flying schedule for the entire trip, and you will see the root of the issue. Clearly, adults needed to make adult decisions and not try to set some silly record. There was no reason to subject a child to that risk. If they simply added a few days to the overall schedule, not worry about a record, and just let the child have fun, it would have been a different atmosphere with far less risk.

This is kind of why 7 year olds shouldn't be operating aircraft. Granted the instructor was irresponsible, but another person who actually knew how to fly could of gave a second opinion.

What a stupid woman."Toys not tools." Too bad the mother wasn't in the plane on the last flight. She talks like somebody with mental problems. It is like listening to a Krishna or a Larouchian or a Jim Jones follower or a schizophrenic. Seems to be a family trait because the grandmother sounds and looks like a loonie, too. They were  all too eager to prove that the girl and themselves were special snowflakes. Huge egos displayed by them. The mother's narcissism is off the charts.

Great find! What a lot of people don't realize is that the complete fault of the accident in Cheyenne was the fault of her flight instructor Joe Reid. He allowed the plane to be overloaded and even forgot the chock removal on the first take off attempt in their haste to take off. It amazes me how people would really believe that the instructor wouldn't have taken the controls just before the crash. This instructor allowed fame to cloud his judgement and he screwed up ultimately causing the death of all three. A lot of the overload was cameras etc they were transporting to FL for the reporters in my understanding.

1996 sucked for American planes. This in April and TWA Flight 800 in July. As an 8 year old at the time, I got really upset when both of these happened. May they all rest in peace.

Foolishness. A horrible attempt to grab headlines. A shameless publicity stunt that resulted in 3 deaths. After this fiasco the Guinness book of world records no longer recognizes such records, most likely to keep glory hunters from trying this again. What did people think would happen?

all those defending the girls abilities, there is a reason children should not be doing specific things that adults do, like controlling huge machinery that can cause harm to themselves or others, children are prone to making mistakes, they are still learning and some are saying "some young kids have done surgery" yeah sure so you want a 7 year old performing heart sugery on you? "oh oops i forgot to do this first" and youre dead, sorry but children are still growing and developing skills, they havent mastered those skills yet.

I thinks it's something that her dad had enough faith in her, to let her attempt this. If it was just for the record, he could've just paid the instructor to fly the plane for the majority of the ride, and say she did it, while having her do mundane things, just for the sake of having pictures of her seemingly take off, and land it. Of course it SHOULDN'T have been attempted, but if he actually believed in his kid's ability (misguided as that belief was) and had the pure intention of empowering his little girl, I blame the instructor the most, if he didn't take over, and correct the plane at the first sign of her making a mistake. If I trust my kid enough to steer my yacht, and the captain's fully aware that his job's to monitor, direct, and take over at any sign of trouble (seeing as how I probably know less than my kid about steering), and she hits an iceberg.... Of course, in retrospect, I'd think it would've been best to have my kid be bubble wrapped, and do nothing risky for the sake of empowerment, but I'd also think "What the fuck was up with the captain?".

back story to the plane crash: the place was 20-30lbs over weight. A huge importance of the older man. Secondly there was a shit storm of a thunderstorm coming their way. Another huge importance of the older man (pilot) but guess what? The girls father had a ton of news crew out there to record this "oh so special feat" and the pilot felt rushed/eager into getting the plan off the ground. Instead of putting off until safety concerns are matched, a good 20 minutes, and risk these money paying reporters leaving, the dad decided to tempt fate. All in all-you can't cheat death

From wiki:

"Lloyd Dubroff, Jessica's father, was Lisa Blair Hathaway's common-law husband
when Jessica and her brother were born. In 1990 he separated from
Hathaway, and in 1991 at age 52 he married 19-year-old Melinda Anne
Hurst, with whom he had a child the following year. In December 1992,
Hathaway gave birth to Jessica's full sister, Jasmine, conceived while
she lived for a time with Lloyd and Melinda in California.[1]

Before his death in the crash, Lloyd Dubroff bought four separate
life insurance policies, each for US$750,000. Two of the policies named
Hathaway as beneficiary and two named Melinda Dubroff, so that each was
to receive $1.5 million in the event of his death, ensuring adequate
child support for his underage children living with the two women. His
grown son and daughter (both in their 30s) from a previous marriage,
were not addressed by these policies.[1]

After the crash, Melinda Dubroff sued Hathaway for Hathaway's $1.5 million: Melinda Dubroff's attorney Roy Litherland said in a San Mateo County court that the $1.5 million Hathaway was designated was "in excess of any reasonable level of child support."[11]

In December 1996, Lisa Hathaway filed a counter-suit against Melinda
Dubroff and Lloyd Dubroff's estate for $1.5 million, the exact amount of money Lloyd Dubroff intended, saying Lloyd Dubroff "gave his word he
would care for and support [her] for the rest and remainder of her
natural life."[12][13]

On December 18, 1997, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Judith
Kozloski ruled that the $1.5 million insurance benefits should be
equally split between the two women; the other claims were dismissed.[14]"
