A lot of cities have what they called “airspace rules” that control the height and locations where sky scrapers can be built. Even in north american cities. They do come in some odd shapes though!😮 Personally , I’d prefer to stay close to the ground!😅😅😅It becomes an awfully long way down if the elevators are out of order and you gotta get to work!😂😂😂😂

Better question: why do we keep building sky scrapers in the United States.

I remember that U2 Tower was going to be the tallest building in Ireland, before they called it off because of a lack of funding. U2 wasn't going to own the tower. U2 would only have a soundproof recording studio at the top of the tower. The rest of the tower would be office space and apartments.

Snobbery, mainly, in Dublin Ireland, there is a middle class obsession with keeping buildings low.

Skyscrapers are a product of pure Capitalism as Europe embraces a more of a socialist platform. Legislation is part of the reason too. That said many US cities have a blend of historical low rise and high rise like, Boston, Philadelphia and New York. There are old cities in the US like Charleston SC that was once the 4th largest city in the US however it has no skyscrapers and that is a result of economics not zoning. Cities with big Central business districts go up.

There seemed to be surprise at learning some European cities don't have skyscrapers because the makeup of the soil would not support the weight of such buildings. You may not be aware that is the same reason the whole middle part of New York City/Manhattan does not have any skyscrapers either. If you did not realize this, look at aerial photos of Manhattan and it will jump out at you - all of the skyscrapers you think about when you envisage Manhattan turn out to be south of Central Park!

I don't think they should be allowed to get away with the historic architecture reason. These cities have horrible eyesores of modern post-war boxes of buildings when they could have required them to have facades that maintained the look of the historic architecture while containing all of the modern conveniences inside. It's hard to believe they don't have building regulations that would have prevented this. Even the city where I live in South Florida has such rules. They wanted to maintain an attractive, cohesive style so it is in the building regulations that all structures must be of Mediterranean (traditional Tuscan) design and have tile roofs. Homes and business certainly do not all look alike, as you can build anything as long a you comply with the guidelines. Even the big box stores like Target and fast food chains like McDonald's have built designs which comply instead of the corporate blueprints they usually use, and even the city operating facility structures like the water "tower" (a round building which sits on the ground and had architectural arches all the way around and a terra cotta tile roof), small utlilites substations and bus stops comply with this. There are no skyscrapers as the building codes also incorporate height restrictions. As a result, visitors always remark about how beautiful where I live is without realizing the subliminal effect of the cohesive design plays a part in that.

I read the little intro why don’t we build skyscrapers like the USA? I can answer that question simply you don’t wanna build crappy buildings that look like shit. It’s rare that a decent looking building is actually built in the United States.

Skyscrapers should certainly be an option. OTOH they concentrate lots of people in one place and that places demands on all sorts of things. Streets and other transportation, parking, sewage and other utilities. It's not the simplest of calculations.

The middle of Indianapolis has a monument to soldiers & sailors that died in war. Other buildings were not allowed to cast a shadow on it, so there are no skyscrapers built South of it.

Turbines on buildings could be an issue if not designed correctly. The Bahrain World Trade Center's 3 turbines I believe are still used, but the Strata in London with the 3 turbines on top are no longer used ( unless they resolved the issue ) residents in the building complained of humming noises and vibrations beacuse of the turbines turning. Just like some farmes out in the middle of the United States complain about wind turbines making humming noise 24hr a day and driving them crazy :)

The Shard is about the tallest that can be built in London due to the soil, mostly clay to a depth of about 500 ft with thin rock courses through it, Limestone and Sandstone. That is cris-crossed with the many tunnels of the London Underground and many subterranean streams and springs. When the underground central section of the new Elizabeth Line was built there was only one or two cm clearance in places to other Underground tunnels. The Shard is constructed of a special lightweight but strong steel and special lightweight but strong glass that cost a fortune to develop. The Elizabeth Clock Tower has had to be underpinned recently as had developed a pronounced lean, still has a 1% list. Making it completely vertical was rejected as the clock had become accustomed to the lean and may have affected its timekeeping or even it stopping if straightened completely. It is weight driven and still wound by hand daily, someone did suggest making it electric wound but he was shot down with a vengeance. The pendulum is regulated by adding or removing old penny coins to it as weights, accurate to half a second a day.

Why would American skyscrapers and European skyscrapers building differ? Ours often require stricter standards to deal with threats of earthquakes and the like, but there's not really much variation in materials, techniques or other things in their construction from one country to the next.

I think it’s civilizational pride! They don’t want to appear to be following a Yankee trend, especially those culturally historic European nations like Germany and France, if anything they most likely view themselves as elegantly refined, certainly not trend followers, especially not followers of trends set by “brash, uncouth Americans”. 😱 eeeew! 😂 Ah, I don’t know? maybe it’s just height restrictions, huh? but I wonder. 🤔

In post-WWII Chicago, especially in the 1950s and 1960s, they were building quite boring steel and glass box skyscrapers after tearing down older, beautiful skyscrapers from 50-75 years earlier. The preservation movement in the city was already getting louder in its protests over the destruction when it got its martyr—Richard Nickel. He was an architectural photographer and preservationist who became obsessed when the city announced it would be tearing down the Stock Exchange building, designed by famed architect Louis B. Sullivan in 1894. After losing the fight in court, he would sneak into the building even when it was being torn down, to retrieve bits of its decoration. One night, he never came home. They found his body buried under debris four weeks later.
