Great interview, Rob. I had the pleasure of meeting Russ and getting his autograph at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Fest some years back. Such talent and versatility - from Fastest Gun and Seven Brides, to Peyton Place, to West Side, to The Haunting and Twin Peaks, he's done it all. With or without "shovels" 🤩 - he's among the greatest of his generation !!
ОтветитьWe watched "Westside Story" the other night and Russ was excellent. Great tumbling moves.
ОтветитьRob thank You for this fascinating story! Great great story 👏 ❤
ОтветитьSo enjoyed this interview with Russ...So many memories of his wonderful films!!!!
ОтветитьWonderful interview with one of my favorite actors...!!!!!!
ОтветитьThat "Shovel" Barn Dance he did in one of the films was awesome too! 👍👍 10🌟
ОтветитьWE ALL LOVED RUSS ....ALWAYS...
ОтветитьGlenn Ford, a great actor & great Canadian.
ОтветитьGidday mate. Love your work. Just wondering if you ever did stuff on Arthur Hunnicut or Walter Brennan. 2 old bushies. Cheers.
ОтветитьIt was great to see Russ Tamblyn and Richard Beymer working together again back in 1990 on the "Twin Peaks" series, after first seeing them together in 1961's "West Side Story"...
A big thank you to "A Word on Westerns" for another great interview...
Great interview. Looking forward to reading his memoir.
ОтветитьI thoroughly enjoyed the dance number. Most movies make us suspend disbelief so it was a wonderful dance to watch.
ОтветитьThank you, nice interview. Very good actor, he always gave me the impression of a good and magical elf, great.
ОтветитьThank for such a fun interview! Russ seems to be very much like his characters!
ОтветитьRob....Thanks. Love Russ. Love his films. I have to get this book.
PS: I turned another friend onto THE COWBOYS with the Duke. And again because he recently saw RUNNING SCARED. Not the Billy Crystal film of the same name. Becuase of THE COWBOYS reference. Thanks for all of your videos Rob. I wish more westerns were being made and appreciated these days. Hopeing the Costners new saga will help that. - Toronto, Canada.
I remember Russ with magic feet, rubber legs and amazing athleticism. He's great.
ОтветитьIt's fun that Richard Beymer and Russ Tamblyn worked together on "Twin Peaks" too. It's strange to think he's 90 years old now.
ОтветитьRUSS TAMBLYN never thought of himself as a great dancer, he thought of himself as a great acrobat who could mix that into great dancing numbers...
Russ had an eclectic career as you don't get movies like WEST SIDE STORY every day and actors have to pay the rent like the rest of us do., so you take what you can get with the schlock pictures.
My friend Robert Relyea who was assistant director on WEST SIDE STORY was also doing the same on JAILHOUSE ROCK, and as Russ Tamblyn was also working on the MGM lot at the time, became a friend of Elvis Preslery and gave him tips for the choregraphy of the Jailhouse Rock number... he told him to point his shoes as he moved, and that made the number come alive be so iconic. I'm sure it's in Russ' book somewhere.
Smoking the pot must have agreed with him as he looks jand talks ust great for someone who is 90!
The first film I saw Russ Tamblyn is was Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I thought you might mention that but you didn't.
ОтветитьSo many insightful stories, so much history yet to share. Thank you, Rob (and Russ)! Wonderful Russ published his memoir - his was a colorful and unique contribution.
I'm pleased to read on his website, Glenn's son, Peter Ford, is doing what he can to protect, preserve and promote the legacies of his dad and mom. I wonder whether it was a positive or a negative, a mixture of both, to grow up the son of someone so accomplished; was the parent-child relationship strongest in childhood, or adulthood? ...
I remember my mom taking us downtown in St Pete to see Tom Thumb when I was about 10, haven't seen it since, but thought he was terrific.
ОтветитьThank you Rob for the interview. I always liked russ tamblyn. I liked him in the haunting. I believe Anthony mann was fired from Spartacus by kirk Douglas and replaced by Stanley Kubrick the same year he did Cimarron 1960.
ОтветитьI've always been a fan of Russ seven brides for seven brothers may be my favorite musical. I'm glad you got to sit down with him and an entertainment lifer..
ОтветитьAnother great interview- Russ was extremely brilliant and talented, grew up watching him
ОтветитьI don’t like his politics, but who cares! He’s amazing and a true American original. So great to hear about his autobiography. Can’t wait to read it.
ОтветитьYeah, said it before, whoever cast Brod Crawford in that show mighta also tried to convince Paramount to cast Mickey Rooney as Shane once hearing they might go with a short guy in the role.
ОтветитьWest Side Story! Working with TARZAN and Glenn Ford too. I liked Ron Ely's TARZAN a lot. Good interview too. Thank You Rob!
ОтветитьGreat interview, Rob.
ОтветитьTo be honest, that dance number was painfully incongruous and didn't fit the film at all, so Glenn was absolutely right on that score, by wanting it cut out. Imagine Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor doing that famous dance number of jumping from wall to wall, dancing with a mop then finishing it off on the ceiling breaking into "High Noon" just before the clock runs out at the train's arrival and Will Kane's anticipated final showdown with the Miller gang.
As a stand alone scene though, Russ's dance number was energetic, athletic and as good as anything Kelly or O'Connor ever did in their careers, and for certain woulda been a great fit in a western themed musical like "Oklahoma" maybe. As it was, it was a show stopper of a different sort that danged near ruined "The Fastest Gun Alive".
Awesome interview. Russ had a very diverse filmography. He was a professional in every role he played. You are a professional interviewer. You listen intently to your subject. You know all of the answers before asking the question. You know your subject better than they know themselves. I would be terrified to be interviewed by Rob Word.😂
Thanks for sharing.
👍👍👏👏🇺🇲🇺🇲
The Fastest Gun Alive is one of the greats! Would sure love to see it on WOW. (That was a hint.) ⬅
ОтветитьI'm glad to know that you've got more of this interview coming up. Thanks, Rob!
ОтветитьSo many great stories about Glenn Ford. He could do it all. Glenn was in two of my favorite comedies, "The Gazebo," and "Imitation General." Wonderful interview of Russ Tamblyn.
ОтветитьThe dance number was great, but, it was weird.
ОтветитьThank you for another great interview. I always loved watching Russ Tamblyn dance and performance; he is so talented. I love hearing the stories he shared and will look for his book.
ОтветитьAnother good one Rob. Russ is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood worked across so many genres . I really liked him in the horror classic The Haunting and he also turned up in David Lynch's Twin peaks in an Hawaiian shirt.
ОтветитьThanx for another great episode Rob. Have a great week. 👍👍👍👍👍
ОтветитьGood video my friend ! I remember back in 1958 or 1959 not sure anymore . when Russ Tamblyn played TOM THUMB . I loved that movie as a kid. THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA.......PS my mom even bought me the 45 record.......
ОтветитьI think Russ has a lot of stories he could tell if given the opportunity. Thanks, Rob.
ОтветитьHey, what about Seven Brides For Seven Brothers?
ОтветитьMany thanks, Rob, RJ and Team AWOW for another interesting interview. I have always admired Russ Tamblyn's dancing and acting. And, as a lifelong Star Trek fan since it first premiered on September 8, 1966, I also admired the late Richard Herd, who played in Star Trek: Voyager as Admiral Owen Paris, father of fan favorite Lieutenant Tom Paris, played by Robert Duncan McNeill. I am also a fan of Sidney Poitier, Dean Stockwell and Neil Young! Anyway, many thanks again, and best of health to you all.
ОтветитьLoved the shovel dance. So glad it stayed in the movie. Thank you so much for your engaging interview.❤🤠
