Is there any meaning to a north or south flagged branch from the nursery and to ensure the tree is planted in that same orientation?

And don't plant them right next to your fence! Amazes me how many neighbors want to drop a tree 3 inches from a fence. We don't want your dead fruit and leaves and a messed up fence in 5 years, smarty.

Thank you for the nice video. I never had it explained to me, that the roots can actually strangle the tree. That makes sense and I hope to avoid that in the future. Mahalo.

This seems kind of silly. Putting in rocks to allow aerobic bacteria to grow at the root base then completely covering it all with clay.... As soon as the clay gets wet it's going to fill every gap. You're better off not bothering and just adding perlite to the soil mix. Probably a lot cheaper than the rocks.

The odds of the roots growing to girdle the tree are nil. Untangling roots is not a bad practice on a dormant tree but what he is saying is pretty well bs.

Notice how the dirt is held compact by the huge network of roots, imagine a mature tree how important is for water retention and anti erosion process especially on slopes.

that is a nicely loved tree! I'm confident it has the best chance of success with you care in planting. I know you were creating a video, but wonder how many trees you can plant in an hour? At some point, time is money and you are creating a balance of time/cost versus success of the trees. I'm sure the investment is worth it, but wonder about how you think about that balance.

Large plants used to have loosely woven, degradable burlap balls: all u had to do was plant thd ball and the roots would grow.out of them. It this no longer done, then?

One thing that got a couple of my trees growing in heavy clay was companion planting with big sunflowers. If you're not careful in heavy clay you'll get a big bonsai tree in the hole you dug. Dog roses and blackberry is OK too?

Great video! I’d never seen an air spade before! I’d also add for viewers, mulch should never touch the bark. Bark must breathe. Too many folks, ironically including ‘landscapers,’ pile mulch so high and thickly at the trunk that they look like volcanos. That’s wrong. Too, for very compacted locations, it would be good to plug-aerate a good radius beyond the disturbed area, to allow rain water to percolate into the even wider area.

Before I even start, I can't believe that you start by wasting a plastic bag! What's wrong with the world???

A minute later and... gun shots in the background? And a massive machine to open up the roots? I can't take this seriously. I don't want to live in your world. I plant dozens of trees a year as a volunteer. (The rest of the years is preparing the site - getting rid of invasives.) We do it by hand and there are definitely no gun shots. I've never heard a gun shot in real life and I prefer to keep t that way.

And then he has to yell over the noise of the compressor??!! We can listen to birds and frogs when we plant.

Here's a much easier way for the average gardener to plant a similar tree, by the way don't cut the bag, save it. 1/ carefully put the rootball in a plastic garbage can with water for a few hours. 2/ gently by grabbing the trunk work the rootball up and down in the water, sort of like a toilet bowl plunger. All the dirt will come off, leaving only the roots. 3/ when you put the tree in the planting hole, spread out all the roots. This is easy to do with the soil off. 4/ plant the tree as per good planting advice. This is WAY easier than using compressed air to blow away the soil, cutting circling roots, etc. Plus the roots will get a good soaking, perfect before planting.

Hello, I like your information.
Question… I'm have a forest red bud. I'm in So Ca. In the Valley where on rare occasions it can have a light freeze. My tree was planted in summer. It's gotten leggy. Too heavy. It's about 6 feet tall. We're in late November. l've had to brace a couple branches. Too heavy. Cuz so young and leggy. Can I cut it back now?

@mchlbk

Amateurs! it's not nearly planted deep enough and the soil below the rootball should have been loosened and watered before planting. Pruning off some of the roots to hide your mistake is the worst thing you could do, you are an embarrassment to the profession.

And the growbag? It didn't occur to you to remove it in a way that allowed for recycling?

Wankers.

This is EXCELLENT advice. I planted a tree about 25 years ago whose roots were encircling the trunk and literally strangling it. An arborist advised corrective action to preserve the beautiful, but declining, live oak tree about five years. Believe me, it's much, much cheaper to take corrective action when planting. Also, it's far less traumatic to the tree, though my tree is once again looking great.
