Jose Mier Drives Glenoaks in Sun Valley During COVID

Sun Valley’s main thoroughfare (at least one of them) is Glenoaks Blvd. In the afternoons this road is usually full of traffic and since Glenoaks parallels Interstate 5, the road is often used by people as an alternative to heavy freeway traffic.

Sun Valley residents also use this for access to the 5 freeway north or south at Hollywood Way and that intersection is jammed most days. The amount of traffic is evident seeing that they are putting a new stoplight under the I-5 overpass—a particularly dangerous spot that has seen many collisions.

April 2020, however, shows that Glenoaks Boulevard is almost empty. The COVID shelter-in-place orders we are under in Sun Valley and the rest of Los Angeles have resulted in a ghost-town feel on some roads. That was the case when I ventured out to take some more video of the traffic in our area. While there were a few cars at the Hollywood Way/Glenoaks intersection, as soon as I turned onto Glenoaks going south there were almost no cars.

The MTA buses are apparently still running since I saw one heading toward me in the opposite direction, but they are probably very empty, just like the Sun Valley streets.

The amount of traffic in our area seems to vary by neighborhood. If I go to one of the more industrial areas of the community, the amount of activity is much more. However, in general, Sun Valley residents seem to be keeping to their own homes.

A view of the I-5 freeway from the Sun Valley foothills shows decreased traffic as well, although the parade of trucks (presumably delivering a lot of supplies) shows that some commerce is taking place. With the nationwide shutdown going at least through the month of April, I wonder how long this lack of traffic will continue.
