A switching regulator is included in an electronic power supply called a switched-mode power supply (SMPS) to facilitate effective electrical power conversion. An SMPS converts voltage and current while transferring power to DC loads via a DC or AC source, Unlike a linear power supply, the pass transistor of a switching-mode supply continually switches between low-dissipation, full-on and full-off states, and spends very little time in the high-dissipation transitions, which minimizes wasted energy.

SMPSs are used in many applications, including:

Computers
SMPSs are commonly used in computers to change the voltage to the appropriate range for safe and efficient operation.

Lighting
SMPSs are often used as an extra-low-voltage source for lighting, and are sometimes called "electronic transformers" in this application.

Industrial automation
SMPSs are used in industrial automation systems to support complex machinery and control system
