Really enjoyed this discussion. Great work from both of you, really enjoy your content.
ОтветитьI was painting the entirety of the episode.
ОтветитьThat actually is a very actual topic for my internal discussions at the moment. I feel that after all the investments I made (bought paint, brushes, all these paint shelves, basing bits, etc.) I have to continue with painting. And also there are always thoughts like "what if I buy this Spearhead, it would be cool!", but then I realize that I'll have to paint dozens more models, still having several dozens in the backlog, which corresponds to that point about a grey pile pressing yourself. Then I realized that I never actually cared about wargaming, and all I wanted is cool merch from franchises (e.g., some cool models from WH40k or other brands) and "tokens" to play D&D. So what I've decided for now is I'll finish the backlog, and then I'll be able to reassess the joy I'm having in the hobby without the grey pressure. And if my hands will get itchy to paint something else - I'll just buy something I'm excited to paint and do that right away
ОтветитьSometimes I listen to the podcast while hobbying, sometimes while I do chores around the house.
If I had complete freedom to do whatever, right now, it wouldn't be the 2-3 larger projects I have going on at this moment, it would be building a few minis. I'm excited about them, but it's not where my immediate interest lies. I want to have a fully painted OGRE force, I want to get these 65 Tyranids completed (I'm so near 3k painted at this point... I've had the army for over a decade), but these are large projects that take time and effort to return, where the other options get me that hit of completion.
I needed this video! As you guys are talking through minipainting guilt syndrome.... I'm painting my Tau and was feeling bad about it. Why? Because I just started playing Warhammer this edition and have only been painting Blood Angels. My buddy keeps telling me to go out and buy units to strengthen my army. I've been painting sooo many dang Blood Angels for the past year that I get nauseous whenever I see the color Mephiston Red. I've bought so many Blood Angels and they're a huge pile of shame. So... Just a couple weeks about I went out and bought the Kill Team of Tau and I told my buddy that Tau would now be my second army for 40k as well. He laid into me so thick because apparently Tau suck in every possible way - everything from their lore to sucky gameplay. I just liked the minis, and they're so far from Space Marines. I honestly needed something new to paint. Kill Team take so much less effort to play and paint.... plus I don't feel bad if I want try painting a different faction unit. Bringining back full circle, I've been sitting here feeling bad about painting my Tau and this episode hit at the right time. Good stuff my dudes.
Ответить@Miniac have you seen Dune: War for Arrakis? More boardgame in mechanics, but has many miniatures! I think you’d love it!
ОтветитьTrapped Under Plastic: "The only podcast that definitely has a viewer that wahses themselves in Mt. Dew using a snickers as soap."
ОтветитьOk, so here goes my rant. First off if you think of this as only a job the magic will burn. I have read some of the comments and have a few thoughts of my own. One of the things I saw was remember it is a job. Yes, that may be. I got back into miniature painting because I came across one of Scott's videos. The subject brought me in, but the person made me stay. So follow your muse, and the beauty within the videos will show. It will push those of us who respect the idea of the art will stay. Do what you want and follow that passion. Scott has lead me to so many great painters and drew me back into this wonderful world. It's called growth. Everyone will have an opinion. I mean, I don't drink a six-pack of Surge a day anymore cause I want to watch my daughters graduate.
ОтветитьJon, wish granted. I only listen while i hobby. Painting pirates for blood and plunder right now 😊
ОтветитьRules teaching is definitely a skill that is developed with experience and practice. Not surprised she failed the first time she tried to do it herself. I've been tabletop gaming for decades and can still struggle to organize a rulebook into a coherent presentation if I've only read it.
ОтветитьWhen you have time could you share where that painting competition you mention in coon rapids is happening. I’m from the twin cities and it be nice to know of another painting competition.
ОтветитьI only ever listen to the podcast while my painting/hobbying <3
ОтветитьPro tip on the pipe bending: In addition to the annealing and the spring benders, stick a piece of styrene rod thats the inside diameter in before you bend it. It will keep the pipe from caving in on itself. The rod may take some yanking to get out but the effect is kinda worth it. Hope that helps.
ОтветитьI understand your discussion on hobby journeys. I started painting individual minis for D&D, then progressed to dioramas, painting full GW armies in WHFB and 40K when I started gaming, migrating back to painting individual miniatures (initially characters) to a high standard, and finally I am now looking at high quality minis on a small scale scenic bases (mini dioramas) for competitions.
I agree with your comment in regards to not overcommitment to purchases. I have so many ideas buzzing around my head. Now when I believe I need new minis, I leave it in my shopping cart (when buying online) for a week before hitting buy to make sure the enthusiasm is still there.
Middle aged mechanic here, hobbying since the 90s. I treat every army project as a collector car restoration. I know it’ll take many years to finish but I have a vision in my head and stick to it. I know if I do a good enough job it will transcend editions of the game and hopefully be a keepsake that outlasts me and brings joy to some relative clearing out dusty boxes in the attic long after I’m gone.
ОтветитьI have some insight in the Verkos Vault situation for Jon. They bought two buildings and the lot a bit before you guys came to town, the year after they had the first facility done and started having classes in which they are saying will be the admin office and other side uses. The main building in the back that was meant for the museum seemed to have been gutted and rebuilt almost entirely. It seems they had a lot of planning since they also plan to be a retail space and continue/ramp up classes in the new space when it finishes. They were supposed to be open for atleast the retail portion by LVO but i guess something came up and werent able to finish in time. The group behind it is pretty small for how ambitious its been. Im a Vegas local and attend the classes there thats just what ive heard while there.
Verkos made a bunch of offers on pieces submitted to the competition so i felt it was pretty cool to see pieces from your favorite artists in real life.
dudes collection is insane though, if theres a boxart he probably owns it and he has crazy pieces from every artist you can think of. Squidmar did an interview with Gary who runs it and will eventually put out a video i think when they go over their LVO experience
Also they are definitely doing that featured artists rotation.
Both a red flannel and yellow flannel. Music critic fans are confused.
Ответить@Miniac on your comment about trouble bending the pipes, I was actually just talking about this with my father earlier today, asked him for some pointers (he won some scale model competitions back in the 70s and 80s). He said he could never get those coil benders to work, either, and he recommended filling the tube with sand. Being the scale we're looking at here, maybe something more fine (like icing sugar, or powdered sugar in the US I think?) may be better. Close off one end (solder, dab of super glue, etc), fill the tube with the powdered sugar and then close the other end to make sure the powder doesn't come out. Then you can bend it, and the filled powder will help prevent it from kinking or caving in. Once the bend is done, just cut off the closed ends and empty the powder.
ОтветитьSell off everything in your massive collection that you lost interest in. $$$ is out there, people will buy anything Warhammer
ОтветитьYou fellows swear too much. I'm a jewish catholic tendie mother with six kids and I was told this channel was family friendly.
ОтветитьVirkos was closed during lvo from the post. But virko definitely hosts workshops at his venue now
ОтветитьCulver's is my go to cheap fast food burger. Our upgraded fast food burgers in Utah are a group of Greek burger joints; Crown Burger, Apollo Burger, Astro Burger, etc. Pastrami burger... mmm...
ОтветитьDoes one have to live in the midwest and wear flannel overshirts to be a mini painter? I mean, that's fine if its a requirement since I live in the midwest and am wearing a flannel overshirt.
ОтветитьSounds like your car needs a thermostat, Scott.
ОтветитьI listened to the end whilst working on my painting projects, and I gotta say this was the best episode in a while, great to hear such open-hearted and supportive comments between the two of you as you grow as painters, very inspiring xx
ОтветитьMy BK of choice is Whopper Junior with double patties. Love it.
ОтветитьRealizing I didn't enjoy playing 40K anymore was one of the most liberating things to happen to me as a painter. Due to scheduling, I play KD:M with my kids, might take up Gaslands after Scott's recent video...but having no internal pressure to have a squad or army painted up by game day? Fantastic feeling.
ОтветитьI need to hear this one. Friend groups and my favorite store have keep pulling me into army games but I hate the process of painting that much in the same scheme and I know I don't like playing at all anymore so I think I really gotta get out and go back to kitbahsing and painting things I'm actually excited for..also gunpla I miss it.
ОтветитьBurger King essential oils pack?
ОтветитьTUP - the podcast that saves valuable time by making the same amount of sense if played at double speed.
ОтветитьTrapped under plastic: the place where 3 minutes in you are peer pressured into the UberEats app for Burger King
ОтветитьRecently gotten into the hobby properly around Oct last year and already have quite a substantial backlog. I love the miniatures, and I love seeing what they can be and how talented people are, but I do find myself in a bit of a stalemate with myself often just wanting to build/paint something but finding lame excuses not to (usually too tired to do my best/not enough time etc.) Something I have to keep reminding myself is to just go at my own pace and enjoy the journey. I need to often remember I'm in no rush (apart from my growing collection that needs to be done at some stage), but I just can't help but add to it when I notice a good deal, some cool looking models or seeing something online from a content creator that inspires me. Definitely need to slow it down and just enjoy the whole process so I don't stress myself out by adding pressure of the ever growing hoarde of grey plastic to be built/painted lol. Great listen though.
ОтветитьMuch love fellas! fantastic show. Thank you both :)
ОтветитьTook a few years off of painting and crafting. It's good to be back! Listening to this while making my two foot circular board for 1490 doom. I have no friends interested in the hobby, hoping 1490D changes this since it has such a low bar to entry. I concur, letting my muse form organically during the process is the only way for me. VERY interested in Trench Crusades hopefully can transition into that. As a solo hobbyist, thanks for being here for us!
ОтветитьTrapped Under Plastic: where you tune for the miniture painting hobby but all you get is unsolicited advice from Jon.
Ответитьsweet bowling shoes, Jon
ОтветитьSomeone needs to get this message to Scott… make the videos u wanna make You could make a video about how to boil water and I would still watch it. Content matters but its YOU that i tune in to watch And Jon too You were so stressed about your video content. Dude I will never play Gaslands and may never convert a hot wheels car but that gaslands video was great!!! Its u man dont worry about content just make the videos u want Your personality and enthusiasm is infectious
ОтветитьInspiration, motivation, passion, whatever you call it isn't something we control ourselves, it's another entity entirely that passes through us, once it's gone its gone, it will come again but it's not the same each time. Use it wisely
ОтветитьThe Cook Out is way better than maybe all other fast food. They use real hamburger meat, and are super cheap.
ОтветитьR.e. silo, read the books. Its called Wool, and you can get the omnibus for cheap these days
ОтветитьI paint like Jon for several years now, one random model at a time, and over the years i acumulated 7 compleetly painted armys.
ОтветитьI recently told my gaming group that I'm not army painting and they can live with it.😂
Nor because I don't like painting but I have found a really passion and joy in display painting so I'm wanting to do that more not speed paint or paint the same mini 10 times
I'm a Las Vegas local and I think the Verko's Vault is some sort of scam/money laundering scheme.
ОтветитьScott I hope you do get around to making your Dune Heartbreakers! Enjoyable show as always thank you!
ОтветитьWelcome to the flannel episode: smells like teen spirit
ОтветитьHow do you guys deal with the feeling that you're not good enough of a painter yet to tackle certain models in your pile of shame? I'm very excited to paint the Skaventide box but don't feel I'm a good enough painter to get those to the standard I'd want for those armies. Same thing for some Moonstone minis I have where, because each of them is more of a hero model, the desire to wait until I'm a better painter is strong even though I'm the most excited to paint them.
