When doing sign language, is it essential to do two hands or is it ok to do it with one?

I'm left-handed, so, my dominant hand is my left. Would I still use my dominant hand for these signs? Or, would using my left hand read "backwards"?

So glad I came across this account. I decided to learn ASL after seeing how many deaf customers were coming into my place of work than ever before! We communicate with sticky notes and some hand gestures. Living the journey of learning not only something new but something that helps me understand and help those who communicate through ASL.

But how is the other person suposed to keep eye contact when they have to look at your hands? And vice versa

Signing is strongly regional! A student needs to associate with deaf people to broaden their understanding. Signs can vary from state to state, or even person to person. A slightly different hand shape can change the meaning of a "normal" sign and a slang sign, example: your sign for morning, in the southeast can mean another morning experience. Also in older deaf people, signing was often punished at school, so it was learned in secrecy. This led to variants in signs, especially "dirty" or sex-related words. It also varied/varies by race, since schools were racially separate, but unequal.

I'm in security and I've encountered two deaf patrons who needed my help. But all I could do was use texts, and it was embarrassing for me not being able to help properly.
So, I'm hoping that learning ASL not only help me work wise, but also get a better job opportunity in the future.

I'm a kid and some times my classmates get hurt and cry a bit and they will not talk so they will use sign language so that's why I'm learning.

I am HoH / wear hearing aids (my hearing loss is degenerative) and I'm also a teacher. I'm teaching a summer school program where I will have two Deaf students and an ASL interpreter. I'm not fluent in ASL, but I'm fairly proficient and can get by in most conversations ok. That being said, it is extremely difficult to speak out loud in English and sign with grammatically correct ASL. I asked the ASL interpreter if I would confuse our students by signing off and on while teaching (with her being the main interpreter, of course) and she said no, that I should try and sign as much as possible.

Do you have any tips for singing correct ASL (I'm pretty familiar with the grammar, although this is an area I need to practice more of) while also speaking in vocal English at the same time? I feel like it's the whole "rub your belly while patting your head" type thing with my brain doing somersaults. I just wasn't sure if there might be any tips or tricks. Thanks!

I know a lot of these videos say the difference between sign language grammar an American English grammar but a lot of deaf people that I signed with sign in American grammar as opposed to your name what they'll sign to me what's your name
