This week on Branching out permaculture with Curtis Hanlon. After finding very old and neglected fruit trees in my half way tree line I show you how I hard pruning them and clear the scrub brush around them for more light this coming spring. This spot is now open to add other fruit trees and bushes. Ep153.

You can use a biodynamic tree paste on that deer wounded tree. 2 parts silica sand or diatomaceous earth, 3 parts clay (local if you have clay soil or bentonite), 4 parts manure (I use horse because that’s what I have) and enough water or fermented horsetail (herb) or nettle tea to make a paintable slurry. Mix in a 5 gallon bucket with a stick or with a paint mixer on a drill. (Strongly advise mixing outside if using power tools as it might go everywhere.)

With a stiff wire brush, brush the trunk vigorously to remove any loose bits then slather on your slurry.

It will and stay on for a year or more. Does wonders for contact wounds and insect damage.
