I just did the thing with the eyes being covered... My sight didn't change. I closed my right eye and I saw everything I was already seeing with the same depth perception. only the right peripheral vision went away.

In 1950, there was an experiment where they made people wear upside-down glasses for a prolonged period of time. Because of the glasses, they were initially seeing everything upside-down. But after a week or so, their brains compensated and flipped the images upright, so they saw things normally. When they stopped wearing the glasses again, everything looked upside-down and they had to reacclimate.

I know this sounds weird, but I didn't realize I lost a lot of my vision from a seizure for quite a while. This was temporary and my vision recovered after a few hours, but the piint is that I didn't immediately realize that I couldn't see. Luckily my vision has never been permanently damaged or effected that severely since, but the fact I didn't immediately notice is weird to me.
How does such a miscommunication happen? How come the brain can think it's recieving visual information when it really isn't? Is this cortex damage or something?

I know I'm late to this video, but being totally blind at age 10 and now for 25 years I use this analogy when people ask if I have "heightened" hearing or touch. I say, my eyes or fingers don't hear/feel better, I just process more information about what I hear and touch. Kind of my hearing is that musical instrument example you gave, but I had to continue practicing it for the rest of my life, no choice. so I'm better at hearing/touching/processing other senses, because I've had a lot of practice. and your example of how the brain reorganizes itself supports that since Its not an increase in the hearing/feeling, but a better/larger throughput of processing. Thanks for the video and I'm enjoying lots of them at the moment.

Went to an optometrist, then ophthalmologist just to be my eyes are fine..yet couldn’t see e right…got an mri and was diagnosed with MS…from lesions on my brain and optics nerve..was really devastating..could y’all do a video on how many affects your body..? :/

I don’t have vision in both eyes at the same time. It’s from a failed surgery as a kid
That also makes sense because I have phenomenal hearing and I can’t do tasks without using my hands.. like i need to feel the plug and outlet to successfully plug the item in for example.
Reading is hard as ever and I am so grateful for audio books!

I got shot in my right eye by an arrow when I was 11 so I don't really have depth perception anymore. I do find it hard to estimate distances sometimes, when someone hands me something for example, but I have been able to adapt to using other queues in other occupations such as fencing or driving. That is, I've learned how to tell if I'm gaining on a car or if I'm within distance with a sword. It makes me wonder if there are any changes in the brain that help process depth in the absence of my binocular vision.

I'm almost at the point at which I've lived more of my life monocularly than binocularly so I don't even really remember what it's like having two working eyes.

I WAS A SEA MAMMAL WHEN I WAS A BOY. I HAD WEBED FINGERS. Not heavy webed fingers a diffrent time. My legs evolved then my shin snaped to the back of my leg and mh legs morphed. Somebody fooled me they stole my legs. Scientist stole them. They Angled my trajectory in my head. You see I'm a real boy here. Thank you so very much for your informative videos. I am so obsessed! I have a request please. Would or could you do a video on how the brain reacts to a person losing their sight and hearing completely? My brother is 64. He is completely deaf and at the age of 40, lost his sight. I would like to know if he can remember colors, shapes, things, faces in his mind now, or are they fading over time.

So a child born with nonfunctioning eyes isn't really blind - they just visualize using senses other than sight.

I'm 31, was born with nystagmus. I could see better when I was younger, but I've lost a significant amount of the vision I had. Now I really don't have any depth perception, and I can no longer recognize faces. Not completely blind though. At least I can remember what things looked like.

I have a tumor on my 3rd nerve and internal carotid artery. It paralyzed my eye at 2 y.o.
So I don't have much vision out of that eye. About the same as you have out of your peripheral vision.
About 35 years ago they found the tumor and removed as much of it as they could. I went from being able to count fingers out to 3ft. to 6ft. And my attitude and comprehension improved as well. It was like having a new part of my brain begin working.
But being they couldn't remove all of the tumor so it has grown back.

I was born with one very weak and crossed eye.... my brain just literally turned that info off.
I'd love to do an FMri to see how or if there are any obvious structural differences between the two eyes as far as connections to non- sight based info. Mostly because I do have a heightened skill in hearing ... larger frequency range than most, and quite good pitch and distance hearing.

I do have poor visual acuity in that I need glasses but that's been that way since I've been 12 years old. But my eye health is good.
