In the rugged expanse of the Canadian Rockies, surveyor Tom Andrews (Randolph Scott) is tasked with charting a course for the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Facing fierce opposition from fur trader Dirk Rourke (Victor Jory), who incites local Indigenous tribes to sabotage the railway's construction, Andrews must navigate treacherous terrain and escalating tensions.
Amidst the turmoil, he finds himself torn between two women: the pacifist Dr. Edith Cabot (Jane Wyatt) and his spirited former fiancée, Cecille Gautier (Nancy Olson).
As sabotage and rebellion threaten the project's success, Andrews must confront personal and professional challenges to unite a nation through steel and determination.
