As someone who used to be against audiobooks: Then heard some VERY good apocalyptic thrillers and whatnot. . . . This series has been BRILLIANT and stunning! I am weary about Sci-Fi reading lately but love all science fiction as long as the tropes are rooted in some realism.
This series keeps you wondering and the ominous-ness of the Dragons, and the way the narrator displays that ominous feeling, gives the story a richer life. It's so amazing I'm already on Elven Doom and just started 2 days ago!

Death before dragons is such an amazing series

I have no words with how much I identify with this book, I’m also 42 with CPTSD I have been to battle and this resonates deeply with me. I know the deep ache of leaving children so they would be safe. I know the joy of reuniting with them and making a relationship of love and trust. This book speaks to me like therapy. Thank you ☺️

One of the reasons I love Val, is that she's so real. It might sound strange to say that about a badass half elf assasin, but since she IS indisputably a badass with many strengths, I love that her character is balanced and still has room for growth. I appreciate that the author gives her chalanges that cause Val to grow as a person. Val is pretty darned strong and physically capable (despite her asthma), but she would probably describe herself as impatient and a poor negotiator. So the author gives her opportunities to grow in patience and tact. She lead the goblin negotiations in a previous book, despite bringing in her captain to officially lead. In this book, she expresses that she's not a scientist, and she has to figure out some engineering on the fly. She's so well rounded, but it's believable and relatable because she's her own harshest critic.

Ms Buroker can't write an action scene to save her protagonists life, but i stopped holding it against her around the second hour of the first book.

Dragons are not natural beings . Most you'll meet are constructs, made by some mage or other, so long ago they themselves forgot their beginning.
The few True Dragons .. you wont survive the meeting . They are pure magic. Raw chaos energy, shaped like a Dragon for a while.

I love this series however I'd love when she finally enters the other realm and has a conversation with her father and how her half sibling will receive her or will they treat her poorly because she is half human.
