He could easily jump a few more inches higher, but in 1990 his trainer José Godoy die and Javier just retire a couple of years later and star sky diving and things like that. He was just an easy spring jumping effortless.

Such an underrated channel. I'm not even an athlete and only watch the Olympics normally. Love the work you are doing here. Great watch.

Let me say that Barshim failed 2.46 for such a few that he was probably at the same level of Javier Sotomayor before getting injured. Such a pity he couldn't make it. It's amazing that Sotomayor's WR is still there!

It will happen again and even higher. Barshim could have jumped 2.50 m in 2014. He had this ability!

This is clearly incredible to do that at his height. He's 6 ft 4. If Wilt Chamberlain was doing the high jump at 7 ft 1 and using the Fosbury flop like they do now, he woulda destroyed that record prolly. Wilt had a 50 inch vertical. The reason this record hasn't been broken is cause the guys with the best verts play basketball and football.

Fact is Sotomayor did NOT jump 2.45m.
HE TOUCHED THE BAR HEAVILY (!!!), HE WAS JUST LUCKY THE BAR DIDN'T FALL !!!
And by the way, the first time he jumped 2.43, the same thing happened.

He was found guilty twice of having banned drugs in his system. Once Cocaine and the second time nandrolone. The 80’s were notorious for drug cheats in sports.
Draw your own conclusions.

I really wonder what if Sotomayor played basketball in the NBA, or what if Michael Jordan did high jump. They were more or less of the same generation. It could have been an interesting rivalry.

Cuban born & raised here. I remember watching him as a kid break the world record at Salamanca Stadium. Cuba was such a force in the 80's, winning the 91 Panamericans in Habana and finishing 5th following year at the Olympic games in Barcelona with 15 gold medals. A communist island of 10 million peope, badly managed and with an economic embargo. Incredible!

I think that record and most big records, are a combination of special conditions that are very hard to recreate, training at very young age, genetics, commitment, state of mind and peak performance at the time of the record attempt. Also the way he runs to attack the bar, compare his run to the resent champions it looks different

The way that Sotomayor was recruited is not what this video recounts. He didn't live in Havana. Sotomayor was born and raised in a small town of the Matanzas' province. The town name is Limonar. At 12yrs old he joined the sports school (EIDE) of Matanzas, dreaming to be a runner. Jumping was part of the track and field training. The high jump coach at that school was the one who discovered his innate abilities.

It's interesting how 1980's male track and field stars don't carry the stigma of doping. Even though they have records almost as long ago as the women do. And this man failed two drug tests including testing positive for steroids. I would think that's something to include in his track and field history.
