One study found that 40% of 16 to 24-year-olds reported frequent feelings of loneliness. The surgeon general recently called loneliness a public health crisis, and loneliness is associated with poor general health, physical inactivity, poor sleep quality, increased substance use, depression, anxiety, and suicide. This study focused on a behavioral intervention called resilience training (RT) to improve emotional regulation, self-perception, and social interactions. It does so by teaching mindfulness, self-compassion, and mentalization skills.
The RT group saw a greater decrease in loneliness, correlated with increased resilience, mindfulness, and self-compassion. As I've grown in my fitness journey, I've found that cultivating resilience and discipline are essential to a healthy lifestyle. Grit by Angela Duckworth is a fantastic book on the science of resilience and how we can develop resilience in our lives.
