A variant of the P-47 (the XP-47J with special turbosupercharger) was the fastest plane in WWII (505 mph), although it never saw combat. Certain P-47's were designed to chase V-1 rockets. The P-47 is my favorite WWII plane, the Krauts just couldn't outdive it. It could fly with cylinder heads blown off, the pistons slapping in the breeze. The P-51 Mustang was water cooled and one little bullet could take it out of action.

If the Mustang was a racehorse then the Thunderbolt was a stampeding bison. These beasts were just about indestructible.

Although this plane was a heavy one it could wipe out a german fighter with a few bursts of fire..

With a stack of .50 cal MGs this beast would still find relevance , in this day and age , in certain applications of combat . Jets may go faster in the top end but the majority of attack missions are actually flown at speeds equivalent to The P 47 .

A testament to how these beauties were built that there are still more than a dozen P47s flying today.

Outstanding in every way! Would love for them or any one of them to appear at the Veterans Memorial Airshow at Columbia,Mo. It's been going for quite some time now. Held each Memorial Day weekend. P-47s would really be a hit.

Too bad it took 20th Century warfare to bring these beasts into being but given the immense cost per plane and the ginormous fuel consumption of that 2800 cubic inch engine, this wasn't something that a recreational aviator was going to rush out and buy! BTW, the plane was designed by a Russian!

Greatest generation that ever lived, flew thies and other airplanes for the US Army Air corps. Same generation that stormed the beaches of Normandy France. As a US Navy vet, my hat is off to this generation and all there branches of service they served in during WW2.

I was a crew chief on a P-47 N named " Canned Heat" while assigned to the 45 th fighter squadron at Suffolk County AFB, Li, NY in 1952. Used to love running it up to keep it warm while standing alert. great reliable aircraft & easy to maintain. We only lost two aircraft during that time, One was inadvertently shot down while towing a target during gunnery practice and the other when the pilot got it into a flat spin and could not recover. The P-47's were phased out in 1953 and replaced with F- 86 Saber.' Andy L.

I believe that at the end of their production they were the fastest piston drive aircraft. I wished they could be in the Reno air races, I'd be interested to see how they would fare.

Doesn't sound like a single one of these great planes has the Turbo hooked up. When they fly by, there should be a deep, throaty & LOUD rap to the exhaust note. See P-47 Compilation - Tallahassee Lasse or P-47 - FW 190 Fly By. A little throttle makes the exhaust crack louder. It costs more to keep the Turbo working.

Thankyou for sharing this video. Really cool to see 5 Thunderbolts flying together in formation. A buddy of mine was an aircraft broker and he had a P-47D that needed new spark plugs installed. Being an A&P mechanic, I changed out the spark plugs in its Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, then recowled up the engine. I started the plane up, taxied it to the flight line to perform mag checks and it was all good. It was a fun airplane to taxi on the ground because you have to do S turns to see whats in front of you because when the cowl flaps are open you can't see anything. I really enjoyed running up his Thunderbolt and feeling the shear power of that R-2800 engine at wide open throttle. Those were fun times.
