Ecclesiastes 12:12 is one of a handful of texts often used by cultists to discount the value of book learning and higher education. Unfortunately, Christians too can be often found citing this text to a similar purpose. "... the writing of many books is endless, and excessive devotion [to books] is wearying to the body." (NASB) Does the context in Ecclesiastes permit an application which discounts advanced education? And what about the historical context, i.e. the view of wisdom advocated in ancient Israel, and even the Jewish view of learning today?
