Foot and Ankle Swelling: What Causes It?

My wife was told that her mild feet swelling is a guarantee for heart and kidney failure. This lady was not a doctor. Is there any validity to this claim? How worried should i be?

I'm 68 years and while getting out of my row boat I hit my shin on the ore lock. Yeah, it hurt but it didn't bleed. Couple days later I got a hard lump on the spot and my foot got puffy. No big deal I thought but now 2 weeks later the lump is almost gone but my foot still gets swollen every evening. By morning it's almost normal again.

My oldest daughter has had one foot swell so bad since she was young I took her to specialist after specialist no one has the answer . One doctor said to me well I can’t figure it out so I guess she will have to live with it . Still to this day it swell like you can pop it like a balloon. Her toes literally look like they will pop right off her foot . It’s horrible . Any suggestion on what it could be ? She is 41 years old now and they still don’t have answers for it . Does not matter the cause, the fix is electrolytes, more potassium, more salt. Fixed mine. The doctors just shrugged. So I watched Dr Eric Berg. He explains the mechanics of water in our cells and if they are full of fluid you actualky need salt to release it from the cells. So why on earth do doctors tell you to limit sodium? 🤦‍♀️

9/17/24: I have this weird thing on both feet ankles, I have a fatty roll around LUMP on both ankles where the LYMPH glands are...so I figure it has something to do with being injected with 4 viles of Formaldehyde in 2013 at John Hopkins Hospital in Maryland, it's like the Formaldehyde is sitting in Lymph glands Coagulation... it makes me look huge and unhealthy...

Wow, I just went through this. Six months ago I noticed when I was sitting and would cross one foot over the other that the top of my right foot felt tender. Didn't think much about it. Maybe it was an age thing, I'm 68. But then pain started to happen about six months later. So I went to an Orthopedic. Had an MRI. No broken bones, tendons & ligaments were fine. Was told everything was good. But, it wasn't good. The pain got worse and the swelling started to happen and got worse every day. So, I researched podiatrists in my area and picked one with 25 years experience. He looked at my MRI and said I had severe arthritis and cushioning between where my leg bone and foot bone meet was no longer there so I had bone on bone happening. He took a sample of the fluid from my severe swelling (that was the worse excruciating painful experience I ever felt. Made me cry a little) to send to a lab to make sure we weren't dealing with an infection. Came back, no infection. Great. So we decided on a steroid shot into the ankle. Finally after about 4 or 5 days the swelling was gone in my ankle but took about another 3 days for the swelling to go away in my toes. The pain was gone but that only lasted about two weeks. I have pain again but so far no swelling. I'll live with the pain, it's the swelling that's the worse. But, I have to use a walker or cane to get around. I know I'll probably have to have surgery some day but I'm trying to put it off as long as possible.

Holy crap. Both my feet swelled up and I didn't notice till 3 days ago. I live in Canada so I'm screwed if treatment is needed. I'm on a 2 month wait for a artery exam where they inject you with dye. Cause if heart issues in the family, also I'm 36.

Hi, I'm 73 years old- and recently (I thought because of the extreme heat) I've developed swollen ankles and legs. I have just started wearing compression stockings and after about 2 hours I start getting heart palpitations and nausea- I don't even know what kind of doctor to go to- Heart? Venous?

I've been looking around but can't seem to find anything for left foot, shrinking or rather the water being pulled or sucked out of it so it looks dehydrated and or the bones show more prominently.
