@bavwill ... tribes that practise exogamy ... Exogamy is the custom of marrying outside a community, clan, or tribe.

@FadoDeo4444 This! I did this with Korean. I listened to Korean music for years. Then I finally started learning the language in a scholarly fashion and I was absolutely ASTOUNDED by what I already knew!

@bavwill He said "exogamy" which is when someone from a tribe or sect marries someone from a different tribe, usually because it is required by custom or law. He's saying that tribes with very different languages may practice this and in essence each individual ends up learning the language of the other and/or creating a mixed language throughout generations.

@Iceland1944 I always lamented the fact there was no way to learn Latin in school in my area. Or German. Or French. Or anything at all but Spanish. Never took Spanish.Never liked the sound of it. >.< Almost regret that now, knowing how important it is these days.

again the framing is terrible: a vertical line (shelf) and a vert line (shelf) going straight through your head. This is step one in how not to frame a video; plus we don' want to see a talking head, even for <10 min. Step away from your book shelf, get into a better environment, respect your watchers who have a learning style author than solely auditory: use some props, use a blackboard; and try to vary your voice and intonation more and put more umph into your speech to avoid boring watchers

saying that something gets turned off at around puberty is actually incorrect. The current picture of what happens in the brain is more like something being switched on that blocks the ability we had as children.

my high school (american, private) only offered Spanish and German. I didn't like Spanish after taking it in middle school, so I was really happy to take German, except the teacher ended up completely ruining it for me and I struggled a bit. In college I switched to Chinese, and for some reason, I picked up the lessons pretty quick! (until the classes ended and I forgot a lot...)

I like Marisa Monte. :) There are many different styles. Marisa is slow, while someone like Ivete Sangalo is faster. There is also a LOT of gospel music. Which is pretty even if you aren't that religious. (Aline Barros,Fernanda Brum) Tim Maia too. Or if you are into "Ai se eu te pego" then I think you would like someone like Luan Santana maybe? Good Luck! :D

I would recommend like Rita Lee, Mutantes, Raul Seixas... they are all seventies' old-guard soft-rockers and not my favorite musicians, but their lyrics are usually quite witty, and I think it would be really, really cool to learn brazilian portuguese through them. Boa sorte!

But my teachers were really happy and a pretty surprised I was so interested in their language and actually putting effort to speak to them in that instead of English, even after class, and they and my classmates were also surprised at the fact that I even took 3 languages at the same time, classmates would say "why would you do that?! that's crazy just stick to one and get the requirement over with easily" LOL

I took Spanish(2 years), Latin(3 years), and french (1 year) and excelled , but i think that was because i was genuinely interested and conversed with my teachers in the target languages ( except latin i could never speak it correctly but understood my teacher completely). so we students exist but i could not find another with my zeal in my school.

I am about to embark on learning the Thai language using the "automatic language growth" ALG method in Bangkok. Basically, you watch 2 native speakers of Thai act out scenarios with various props. I was told NOT to use any other study methods as it would actually hamper my progress. Is there any documented basis for that statement? I would like to start in on learning the Thai script by myself and concurrent with the ALG method.

I'm an atheist, but quite like the missionary idea and had thought of doing it recently. There are very cheap trilingual bibles even on kindle (English, Esperanto, and then various third languages), so it seems like a great idea. The New Testament is sufficiently story-based, conversational, and human, that much can be gained from it whether one believes or not.
