Prominent Druze cleric in Syria rejects Netanyahu’s statements on 'protecting' the Druze community

Prominent Syrian Druze leader Sheikh Hammoud Al-Hinnawi spoke out against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the Israeli leader demanded a “complete demilitarisation” of southern Syria, making specific reference to Syria’s Druze community.
“We will not tolerate any threat to the Druze community in southern Syria,” Netanyahu stated on 23 February.

Al-Hinnawi of Sweida, a city in southern Syria, said that the Druze community “do not bear responsibility for these statements”. Rejecting any ties with Netanyahu’s government, Al-Hinnawi said that the Israeli prime minister’s comments were made “independently by them, based on their own vision and their future aspirations.”

When asked about potential Israeli confrontation, the sheikh responded that he encourages peace and reconciliation.

However, the sheikh also states, directing a message “specifically to the Israelis” that if they were under attack “from within or outside” then they would not accept aggression and have the right to defend themselves, “even if it costs us our lives”.
