Do you think backbiting is happening at your workplace or place of study?
Glenn Rolfsen's talk is about what contributes to a toxic work environment and what the significant factors are that determine our working life quality. His approach addresses how to achieve a permanent end to slander and bullying among adults in the workplace.

Glenn D. Rolfsen is a psychotherapist working in corporate health service in Oslo. He has also worked as a teacher to educate gestalt therapists in Norway and several European countries. He is particularly concerned with the psychosocial work environment in enterprises. As corporate counsel and leadership consultant, he works daily to improve working life quality for employees.

According to my experience I have come to learn that problems are everywhere,maybe they might be different depending on the organization you are working with.If you runaway from problems it doesn’t really guarantee you that wherever you are going you will find peace,remember you don’t leave in a vacuum meaning wherever you are running to there are people and dealing with a human mind has always been complex.It’s a 50/50 situation when it comes to opting to resign.The grass ain’t always greener.From what I have gathered almost every company has backbiting,backstabbers,snitches so if it’s everywhere where are you running to?

It’s my third week in a team of only males and me being the only woman. There seems to be a lot of judging of one of the guys whose actually going through a lot personally but also no one is really being trained or supported and we hardly work together because we usually look after the biggest store in our area alone although other stores half our size have teams of 10.

I have both lost jobs and left jobs DUE TO working environments like this. It is frustrating when “leadership” does nothing to address this. I have also learned how to stop gossiping myself, but others do it anyway. This is very helpful. Thank you for the insight.

Is it possible that one is NOT bullying but rather addressing an area of concern for growth? We are overly sensitive to/when areas of deficiency is addressed. Some people leave a conversation with one interpretation that differs from the other person’s experience. That “reality” is shared with any and everyone willing to listen. Looking for validation and comfort.

You know the best way to disrupt and improve (or improve and disrupt if your HR) a toxic work place is by joining a union and going on strike. Theyll never treat you better at work than when everyone just walks out all at once.

Wheeeew, Lord! I work with a lot of men and it’s cool because they are pretty chill for the most part! But then you have those mad at life women! Ugggghhh! Don’t let somebody buy you lunch and they find out! Just being nice, not flirting or anything. Just kind! Those women act as the end of the world is occurring!

Really liked the speech. Im in a toxic working environment where backbiting is a normal thing. Personally unfortunately became like others get in bacbiting sometimes, but from now i will stop that. By the way, In islam, prophet Muhammad pbuh said:

"Do you know what is backbiting?" The Companions said: "Allah and His Messenger know better." Thereupon he said, "Backbiting is talking about your (Muslim) brother in a manner which he dislikes." It was said to him: "What if my (Muslim) brother is as I say." He said, "If he is actually as you say, then that is backbiting; but if that is not in him, that is slandering

Strong personality has the power to make a change because of their influence!

I hope people who have a strong personality could use their power for good instead of bad! If you have that power on your words be a good example in away that people would be inspired changing their outlook in life!

Politicians and other media influencers have that power to make our world better instead of humiliation!

Gossip, backstabbing and resentment will happen no matter what, It become normal live in this world. The only option is to get rid of the problem, get rid of the worm inside the organization that feeds everyone and also the toxic people...we need to remove them before corruption happened.

Listen folks. Backbiting is a human affliction. It can be manged but that's as good as its going to get. We are human and this is what we do. Its tribal. Seeking out like minded people by identifying (backbiting) those that differ from us.
Expect that it is going to happen and let it roll off you.
I'm confident that since this video was originally posted, not much has changed in your workplaces.

I agree wholeheartedly with this tedtalk, however there are too many ppl at the workplace who suffer from mental illness who purposefully or without self awareness perpetuate chaos under the guise of leadership. Bullying others, micro managing, or with their passive aggressive behaviors. I was Mr.Nice Guy for a year to test this and nothing has changed.

This is the first time I’ve seen this video. But a few years ago at work I gathered a few friends and said let’s make a pact where for 30 days we don’t talk about anything negative about other people. Everyone agreed but before the first week was out people were saying they didn’t want to abide by this agreement because not having the Ability to vent about things going on in the workplace was making them feel worse and they felt the camaraderie of coworkers being able to share negative experiences was what help them get through the day. Anyways I thought it was an interesting perspective and wonder if anyone else can relate?

So long story short is for every working environment to grow and flourish. You need a constant open reflection of each other with a positive and negative feedback loop, the person reporting or complaining should have no fear of being attacked by the pack, a report should be risen and investigated by a fair group of employees to review if and why someones report is accepted as good or bad for the moral of the team & company growth or whether the reporter is being unfair. I think the main reason this goes u noticed is when management either are over worked and drained or h&r fear fighting for the employees or management disregarding vital information for the growth and expansion of a ever growing consciousness in business, social and economic development, along side improved health and happiness

Sometimes it is useful though. As much as i didnt want to hear everyone talk badly about one employee, My coworkers warned me about our bosses alzheimers and that helped me stay compassionate when he kept asking me to repeatedly covers shifts I was saying no to. Instead of getting all amped thinking this guy keeps trying to push me into working a shift I keep saying no to I can depersonalize it instead

First of all, in my mind, there's two distinct different types of environments that can be discussed. The physical environment, and the mental/psychological environment. And there's some overlap there too. Presently here in the States, we're now dealing with work environments that have declined in psychological quality due to the declining social/economic lifestyle quality in America. Although most job sites are now physically safer due to legislation which created "OSHA." States did similar legislations. So workers/employers are trained, enlightened on safer, physically healthier ways of functioning and accomplishing tasks. But little has be dealt with in terms of more qualitative, healthier mental or psychological environments of work. In the past, if anything, the focus was on reducing worker mental distraction. And that was about it.

Have you experienced being in a situation where a person comes up with a malicious talk in the absence of another person?
I thank Glenn for his talk on this and your triple filter test was peculiar.
Friends, just avoid backbiting by undergoing the following test.
Check whether it's true
Is that something good?
Is that useful?
So if you can’t say something good, then say nothing at all.
