Bulguksa Temple has roots all the way back to 8th century Korea from the Silla Dynasty. It was established as a religious complex, with most of it being built from granite, wood and stone.
The area itself is divided into two: The Seokguram Grotto which houses a statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha. Then there is the main Bulguksa Temple comprised of wooden buildings on raised stone terraces.
I also had the fortune to also see Korean paper lanterns being on full display on the day I went, each filled with people’s names, messages and more. It lent to an overall calm atmosphere in the temple itself, with a nice contrast of the bustling crowd near the entrance and the main courtyard.
This was an amazing experience—highly recommend going to Bulguksa whenever you go to Gyeongju.
