Ranks and insignia of Indian police forces:

Indian police service IPS officers:

Indian Police Service (IPS) officers are enrolled by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)

State Police Services officers are enrolled by the respective State Governments, usually through State Public Service Commissions and state police non gazetted officers are enrolled by the state police departments.

State police Non-Gazetted Officers:

Police Constable = No insignia on his shoulder

Senior Police Constable =Two chevrons facing downward

Head Constable = Three chevrons facing downward

Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police or ASI =One Star with a red and blue ribbon at the outer edge of the shoulder straps

Sub-Inspector of Police or SI= Two stars and, a red and a blue ribbon at the shoulder straps

Assistant Inspector of Police. API =Three stars and a red ribbon at the outer edge of the shoulder straps.This rank exists in Maharashtra Police Service

Inspector of Police INS= Three stars with a red and blue ribbon at the outer edge of the shoulder straps

State Police Gazetted Officers:

Deputy Superintendent of Police or DSP =Three Stars on his shoulder straps

Addl Superintendent of Police (Addl SP)=one national emblem

Superintendent of Police SP = one National Emblem and one Star

Senior Superintendent of Police (Sr. SP) = one National Emblem and two Stars.

Indian Police Service (IPS) Officer:

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Asst. SP) = one star on shoulder straps. 1 year of service)

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Asst. SP) = two stars on shoulder straps. 2 years of service)

Deputy Superintendent of Police or DSP =Three Stars on shoulder straps

Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl. SP) = one national emblem

Superintendent of Police (SP) =one national emblem and one star one shoulder straps.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Sr. SP) = one national emblem and two stars

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) =one national emblem and three stars. DIG is a one star officer.

Inspector General of Police (IGP ) = One Star above Crossed Sword and Baton. IGP is a two star officer

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP)= National Emblem above Crossed Sword and Baton.

Director General of Police (DGP)=one National Emblem above Crossed Sword and Baton. both ADGP/DGP are 3 star officer.

Director of Intelligence Bureau (DIB)= one National Emblem One star and a Crossed Sword and Baton. The DIB is a 4 star post and the senior most IPS officer.

Commissionerate system :

Commissioner of Police (CP) = Director General of Police (DGP) rank . But for this post the designations of Police officers may vary from state to state. for example .DGP rank officer in Delhi and Mumbai metropolitan and a DIG rank officer acts in Kochi metropolitan for the same post.

Special Commissioner of Police (SPL. CP)is the post of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) rank

Joint Commissioner of Police (Jt. CP) is the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP)

Addl. Commissioner of Police (Addl. CP) is the post of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP)

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Selection Grade) is the post of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) is the post of Superintendent of Police (SP)

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Addl. DCP) is the post of Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl SP)

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) is the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)
