Luckily, Linux has a command called shred which does just that!

Degaussers are essentially powerful electromagnets, so a 30 dollar tape eraser can essentially do what a 5,000 dollar degausser does. As for a shredder, you just open the drive up and crack the platter with a hammer, and drill a hole through the cache. Congratulations, you just erased like the NSA, and at a fraction of the cost charged to the American tax payer.
