Thank you Taria , your first sketch books look similar to mine and by your sharing them with us you’ve helped me to stay with my attempts to become an urban sketcher!
One has to begin somewhere, so the journey continues…

It makes feel better to see that I'm going through the same process, you know, making a sketch or a painting that has some clear flaws due to inexperience (like "oh this perspective is a bit dodgy) but always taking with me something that I think I did good in it. Being in the beginning stages it looks like slow progress, sometimes may seem like no progress at all, but a few years from now I hope I'm gonna look back at my first works and realize how far I've got. Thanks for sharing these thoughts, as always, they are invaluable!

I see you went into a “zen doodle “ phase ….…i did that too when wanted to get back to drawing…it lasted a few months but then felt it just wasn’t satisfying…need something “deeper”.

Oh Taria, I think the one thing I took away from you showing us your early sketches is that urban sketching wasn’t a daily thing. You went in and out of US and there are months inbetween. You were scared of sketching in public and that you too only did a weeks worth of daily journaling (mine lasted 3 weeks and it got boring as my life is a bit like Groundhog Day!! 🤣)
And look at you now!!! 🙌😁
Thank you for showing us.

Maybe I stead of putting your work down and self criticism, maybe say you were learning and you did great!, interesting to see your sketches..

Thank you for this timely video Taria and being open enough to share your sketchbook beginnings. It is promising and inspiring. I'm leaving for Hawaii this week and have a brand new sketchbook to take with me. I've not ever sketched/painted with people around me (like on a plane) but I'm going to feel the fear and do it anyway. Sketching truly is the best way to capture memories.

I like the doodle sketchbook. I often feel like I need to have a grand full-page spread but remembering doodles, or trying to work out an angle and perspective is just as valid.

Taria - thank you so much for sharing your early sketchbooks - it really is about perseverance in cultivating the habit - seeing how you went through those early stages is so encouraging!

Taria, this was so great!!! It gave me a much better perspective on everything, not to mention a good kick in the bee-hind. Your sketches were pretty amazing right from the start but it was awesome to see all the different ‘stages’ of your journey based on your sketchbooks. I just love following you ❤️

Oh, your sketches of cars are superb. I always struggle with cars. So many strange angles and rounded forms due to aerodynamic. I suppose I should spend my lunch breaks in the car park.

These early sketches are very inspiring basically proving the fact once more that it is an individual journey that a sketcher follows and patience is the key.

Ah I just started sketching and I really really enjoy it, but I’m not good at all 😂 So it just makes me feel so much better seeing this as you’re an amazing artist and I’m so happy that I found this channel.. and it just puts things into a perspective.. we all have to start somewhere right? Thank you for making those videos 🙌🏼

Enjoyed seeing your earlier sketch books showing that there is always something in front of us to sketch instead of looking for the perfect subject. Like urban artists Danny Gregory and Becky Cao drawing items like your lunch to cars. I keep a small sketch book with a black ball point pen, a few watercolor pencils and water brush in my purse at lunch while in my truck to draw cars with landscape around them. It is so relaxing and happy I have completed another page in my sketchbook. Please continue to share your art and encouragement. Thank you.

Ahh, I missed this one. Your early sketches are way better than my early attempts. The difference that time and practice makes though! I'm at that doodling often stage that you seemed to have been in during 2015 (ish), plus playing with lettering, and thoroughly enjoying my time doing it. Maybe we all go through that phase without realising it? Possibly an unconscious effort to improve, although only family will see my offerings 😆 Mmm, I may spend some more time in supermarket car parks, lol. Not just for cars, but for people... which I'm seriously naff at capturing. I think you mentioned doing more people studies in a more recent video, so looking forward to how you simplify that complicated subject as they're always moving (how dare they, lol). I still can't get my head around drawing different elements of many people to make one sketch person without them having unnaturally angled arms and legs and such. Mine end up spaghetti people! Ha! Thanks for sharing, warts n'all 👍

Why is it when we look at someone else's work we think it's so good, but when we look at our own similar process, we automatically think it's crap? I think your beginning sketches are amazing! A couple remind me of things I have done that I didn't think were good at all. Maybe I'm just too hard on myself. I LOVE your videos. Not only do they have great art and great tips that have helped me out, I also find them so relaxing when I've had a stressful day. So, thank you for what you do!

Inspiring. You know, one video that I feel is missing from your collection is a video on your shading approach, or anything to help demystify that side of the experience. Shading in relation to urban sketching would be a delight to watch.
