That engine is beautiful. When you raise both arms at a concert, the angle formed is 80 degrees, and the knuckles of your fists are rotated to an angle of 22 degrees. Oh, yeah... Honda knew. They just knew!

The GL500I/GL650I fairing really protects one from the wind, although this one has a funky small opaque windscreen. I never felt cold on my GL500I in Ontario, Canada, but I know what it's like to thaw out after riding long distances in sub-zero frost conditions... on a naked 1956 Triumph Tiger 100 in my student days. It's the thawing out that's so painful... ;-)

When there is water in the Gila there is a lot of water. Storms will fill that river in a matter of minutes and has been known to take out bridges when flowing.

I had a 78 CX500 in the late eighties. Fantastic bike.Ran iT up to 118 Mph on the German autobahn on my way from Amsterdam to Hamburg. I don't understand how you can't get it over 80. I am even bigger and heavier then you.

Motto Guzzi had been making engines like that for decades. It's a proven design and Honda used it to make a bullet-proof bike that could run across the country when it's 40 years old. Yeah, its only a 500, but the speed limit was freaking 55 when it was made.

Those motors were originally designed for industrial use. They were pump motors running 12,000 rpm 24/7. The industrial version of had timing gears. The bike version had timing chains with reduced redline. Very durable motors. You would be hard pressed to find a better choice of 500 cc motorcycle to do that trip.

I once rode my bone-stock 1982 Kawasaki KZ550LTD from Havre, MT to Missoula in late November. I took the route through Helena, leaving Havre at 3 PM. The sun set around 4:30 PM, and it was a 5.5-hour ride. The temperature hovered around 20°F in the sunlight, but after dark, it only got colder. With a speed limit of 80 mph on the two-lane highway, over the course of the ride I found myself being "encouraged" (tailgated) to go faster by no less than 5 shitheads driving lifted trucks. Shortly after sunset, my high beam burned out, leaving me stuck with only the low beam for about four hours in the dark.

Bundled up with two sets of gloves, hand warmers in my palms, two sweaters, and a base layer under a leather jacket and a winter coat, I managed to keep the cold at bay until about 7 PM. By then, I was pulling over to press my hands against the crankcase, trying to bring some feeling back into them. I couldn’t feel any of my limbs. I had to wait for cars to pass so I could follow them, as the roads were infested with deer, and my reflexes weren’t up for any sudden decisions—especially while riding without a functional headlight. The moon was out and it was almost full, so the lack of illumination wasn't as much of an impediment as you might think, although the halo effect from my breath hitting the visor in that biting cold meant I had to keep my faceshield cracked the whole time, so my face was as numb as the rest of my body.

I finally pulled into Missoula around 8:50 PM, shaking so badly that I couldn’t even get the key into my front door’s deadbolt after standing there for three minutes. I gave up, circled into the backyard, and laboriously pulled myself into the house through my chest-high bedroom window. I immediately stripped down and sat in a lukewarm shower for almost an hour until I regained feeling.

Then, one of my best friends called and asked if I wanted to go to a goth rave for his little sister's birthday party. So, I threw on a button-up shirt and went out on the town.

It was the most miserable ride I've ever endured. Great memory. I eventually traded that little KZ for a KLR 650, went through more bikes than I care to write about here but eventually got successful enough to drop cash on a new VFR1200x. The VFR is a competent monster, would've fared much better if I redid the ride on that thing.

I still but not much, bad back. I have been from Jacksonville to Niagara falls in September years ago on an kawasaki Vulcan 800b that I still own 63,000 miles. Nice video.

I don't know why (How) EweTube somehow latched onto Goldwings, but I've been getting FLOODED with videos on these lovely critters! Sadly, I sold my beloved Steel Steed many years ago (GL1100), because I just got sick and tired of all the FOOLS on the road trying to smear me across it. sighs
Such a wonderfully INSANE VIDEO/TRIP, but damned if you haven't hit me in all the nostalgia!

Thank you!

Those bikes of that era in the Japanese big 4 history are just plain great rides. I have several good friends and myself with old 1964 up through 1974 model years still running like new. A 305 Super Hawk with one engine overhaul at 158000 miles. Currently it has 261000 miles. First generation Goldwing with 133000 untouched other than normal servicing. I have a 500cc single 4 stroke Yamaha thumper. Unknown mileage but hour meter shows 6127.6 hours. Only normal routine services and a pile of chains and sprockets. Ride on!!

If you don't know the capacity of your gas tank and can't accurately determine consumption in gallons per hour and don't have a watch accurate within ten minutes a day there is no way you should drive cross country without a support van following within sight at all times.
Otherwise, you can calculate how long a tank will last at full throttle, head out and plan to stop for fuel when you have thirty minutes left in the tank. If you are riding Interstate highways you can use mile markers to gauge your progress.

i completely understand cold on a bike. i thought i was tough when i HAD to get my dads sportster to my house from his, he had recently died, and it was time to move his stuff out. so i wanted to get his bike to my house quick, it was 45 when we left, and after gas, and the sun going down it had maintained 37 degrees for the next hour and a half going 100 miles to my house. when i got home i was stiff, it was brutal as fuck. all i had was a t shirt a hoodie, cargo pants and a pair of chucky taylors, and some mechanix gloves. about the point i was gonna say "fuckit, just park it and come get it later" i thought of dad, and how much he loved that bike, i got it home. i wasnt happy, but shes home safe and sound, and im alive, and lessons learned.
