Must-Try Standard Blue Fountain Pen Inks!

What happened to our great friend who worked so well and so full of humour, fun and personality ? He suddenly disappeared a few weeks ago from employment at Goulet’s pen company. Great personality.

I think my favorite "regular" blue is Sailor Manyo Kikyo. All of my other blues (Colorverse NASA, Organic Studios Walden Pond, Endless Alchemy Candy Sea) have a red/purple, so they don't count for this. Birmingham has some interesting blues as well though.

No Baystate? It's my favorite.

Pilot Shin Kai is my favorite blue!

Oh wow, the Noodler's ink is feathering like crazy in the writing example. Why did you recommend it though?

Waterman Serenity Blue is a pretty standard blue that every once in a while has a slight red sheen. It has a special place in my heart as my first fountain pen ink.

Iroshizuku Asa-Gao is my go to Blue. Just got Robert Oster Black N Blue Shake and Shimmy which a fantastic shimmer ink.

Good choices. Monteverde Horizon Blue is another good option.

I’ve used Plains of Abraham for years. It’s awesome! Was unavailable for a while. Glad to see it’s going to be readily available now.

Oxford Blue seems like a good one, I might have to order next!

U FORGOT THE OBJECTIVE BEST BLUE OUT THERE:

NOODLER'S BALTIMORE CANYON BLUE:
BRIGHT, WATERPROOF, RED SHEEN !, WELL BEHAVED IN THE PEN AND ON ANY PAPER AND DYE BASED.

THERE'S NO OTHER INK LIKE THIS ONE, THE ONLY CLOSE ONE IS SEIBOKU U MENTIONED BUT IT'S NOT BRIGHT AND IT'S PIGMENT BASED.

A couple others to add to the please consider list: Pilot Iroshizuku aka-iro and Monteverde Horizon Blue. The latter is a nice deep, but not blue-black, blue while the former is the wonderful warm blue of a cloudless sky. One is a more serious and proper blue while the other a casual friendly blue. Both great.

Please do one for yellow and oranges, matter of facts all the colors!

Sailor Seiboku works so nicely in my TWSBI Diamond AL Mini with a 1.1mm stub.

Lately, my favorite blue ink is KWZ Over Around Vistula. It's beautiful.

Mont Blanc UNICEF Blue is my fav blue... so bright its almost turquoise.

Really hate to be that one guy commenting about this. My friend also into pens did search and rescue operations for the US coast guard and saw some gnarly unforgettable scenes. Thumbnail didn’t put him in a good mood long story short.

What pen were you using to demo the inks?

Asa-gao is my safest option for every new pen to try. Maybe it's boring but reliable and flows good both in dry pens and wet pens

Okay, but...is that a felt tipped pen? Asking as I'm very curious about it!

I am not a fan of blue inks, because at school we used exclusively royal blue ink cartridges with fountain pens. As a result I find most blue colours that are anywhere near royal blue quite boring now. I like some teals, turquoise and grey-blue inks, but avoid the "boring blue" shades when possible.

Love blues… And purples not to mention sheens and shimmer

My blue ink of choice (from Goulet, of course) is Sailor Manyo Kikyou. The color reminds me of blue jeans: blue with a touch of grey and without being purple-ish. I always have my vintage Parker 51 inked up with it, and it works beautifully - flow is great and it cleans nicely from the (restored) aeromatic fill mechanism.

Maiora Blue is a wonderful ink with splendid qualities.

I use the DeAtraments Blue document ink, at least 2 of my pens are alwyas inked up with it,
Another good one is the standard Lamy blue that comes standard with their fountain pens,

I love Noodler’s Liberty’s Elysium. It is a vibrant very water resistant ink. It is similar to the rich blue of Pilot Iroshizuku Asa-gao, another great ink. Thanks for the videos, Brian

Noodler's Luxury Blue is probably my favourite.

These are all more-or-less pure blues (just say no to tealish or purplish blues), moderate to deeply saturated, and medium to dark tinted. If I had to choose one it would be Blue Velvet. But fortunately I don't have to.

Blue is such a conventional, corporate color. So no blues for me. With that rule in place, I've limited the blue family to only about half the bottles of ink on my shelf! What good is a rule without exceptions? Same with black, I avoid that too, so it's only about half the rest of them.

What kind of pen do you use to swatch that can do bold blobs that transition to fine lines? Or is it a special way you’re holding the pen? Maybe applying a lot of pressure to the nib?

De Atramentis Fog Grey is my favorite ink of all time!!! I'm almost out of it and must replace my bottle soon!! I can't live without it. :)
